Movie Review: A new swaddling idea for all of you!

Hello all! Those of you who are reading this bleary eyed, probubly holding your newborn right now, I would like to say there is light at the end of the tunnel. My son is 7 months old now and is a complete joy, but boy did it take some work to get there! These techniques worked fabulously for our baby, and boy he was a fussy one- one of those kids who wants only to sleep in your arms, or the carseat! My husband and I watched this video before the baby, and after again during those first weeks. We started using the techniques right away in the hospital. If you are having your baby stay with you in your hospital room, as most due now a day, you will want to know the techniques. Harvey Karp makes the swaddling technique used in his video look easy, but I could never get it right! The key to swaddling sucess is the right blanket!!! It has to be BIG square, not rectangle! Now that being said, most receiving blankets out there are rectangle! Good luck finding square ones! (...)sells a 3 pack of lightweight receiving blankets that are made of a stretchy t shirt like material. We absolutely loved them, and are saving these flimsy things for our next baby. Heres how I modified the swaddle, see if it works for you.
1. forget about swaddling the feet. Leave the feet out. This is good if you need to strap your baby into a swing or bouncy chair after too.
2. Fold a square blanket in half, so it looks like a triangle.
3. lay it on a flat surface so it looks like an upside down triangle when you are looking down on it (got that?) the folded edge on top, you see?
4. Lay your screaming mimi down on the blanket with the folded edge at the back of his or her neck. Position her slightly off center, more toward the left.
5. Ok, now for the wrapping. You have to do it tight!
6. hold your babies right arm(your left) down at her side and pull the left edge of the blanket over her arm and shoulder toward the right. Tuck the corner under her torso. Grab the right side of the blanket while holding her torso and pull to tighten the blanket that is wrapped around her already.
7. Now pin her left arm(your right) to her body. Wrap the remaining right half of the blanket tightly aroung her body, very snugly.
8. if you have done this correctly and snugly enough, you should have been able to come up and around her back and tuck the corner of the blanket into the front of the wrap to secure your swaddle even more.
This worked great for us because alot of the time our son was strapped into his swing and we needed his legs free to bring the harness up in between his legs. My husband and I would compliment each other on a stellar swaddling job, and see who could get the most baby proof swaddle going. ( you get silly when sleep deprived)
