Movie Reviews of The Guardian

Movie Review: Great depiction of what goes on behind the scenes of the Coast Guard...
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie around March 2007 and I am likely going to watch it again because of the great dramatic water rescue scenes and the well performed acting by actors Kevin Costner and Ashton Kutcher (I have to say I am in love with Ashton Kutcher's acting and he did it again very well in this movie). The movie does a beyond terrific job showing what goes behind the scenes of the Coast Guard. It should make the people who serve on the US Coast Guard and Navy feel very good to have them potrayed in a positive light, and we should honor their brave service to out country.

This is definitely a DVD worth owning and watching at least twice a year with family and friends. You might be able to buy it on Netflix for under $10.

Finally I recommend that you watch the special features of how the movie was made and what actually goes on behind the scenes of the Coast Guard. You will learn a lot from the special features secton. You will definitely love this movie and it is a classic worth owning. I just wish I watched the movie in a theater with other people.

Movie Review: A surprising gem!
Summary: 5 Stars

Honestly, I wasn't expecting much of this movie. Afterall, it had Ashton Kutcher, from Punk'd! But, it was a superbly well put together movie. Ashton, was paired with the older and better Kevin Costner, and the two of them did a tremendous job throughout the movie. Sure, there's the usual formulaic method of pairing the young athletic guy with the washed up gruff officer, but Kutcher and Costner surprised me.

The 137 minutes went by quite quickly, and it didn't feel slow at all. The rescue swimmer training was definitely an eye opener (nice to see Neal McDonough pop up as a trainer there!). It gave me a newfound sense of respect for our brave men and women in the USCG, and it didn't do it in any overtly brash way either.

"That others may live" is embodied especially at the end (I won't spoil the ending), and it was quite a heart rendering moment. 2 thumbs way up for a tastefully done film about the coast guard.

And I agree with the guy below- whoever designed the DVD jacket cover should be taken to the back cellar and flogged.

Movie Review: Rescue swimmers like it wet
Summary: 5 Stars

Rescue swimmers like it wet
And often freezing cold
This movie tells the story
Of the few, the brave, the bold

Jumping out of choppers
And braving ten foot waves
Saving those who otherwise
Would go to watery graves

Randall ought to chuck it in
But just will not admit
He's now too old to do the job
And that its time to quit

An accident changes his life
And puts him in the bleachers
While once he was an action man
He's now one of the teachers

Fischer wants to be the best
And though the training's hard
He wants to break each record
That's been set by the Coast Guard

Two men who share a special bond
Each with a troubled past
Randall has experience
While Fischer's just plain fast

Though really long you'll never feel
The numbness in your rear
Action, drama and romance
Are all included here

Movie Review: One of the best action adventure films in a long time
Summary: 5 Stars

Admittedly, how could they go wrong? They had Costner, a heroic group of role models, the fallen warrior theme, music from Bryan Adams. That combination has led to success many times.

"The Guardian" takes the expected mix of Hollywood and hoorah and adds just enough heart wrenching gut punches to keep you on the edge of your seat.

Kevin Costner stars as Ben Randall, a Coast Guard swimmer who's the only surviving member of his team. Randall's been assigned to teach new swimmer trainees so he can 'download his impressive resume on the next generation'. Jake Fischer is his star student, a brash overconfident young swim champion who has what it takes in the pool--but maybe not on the team.

The film handles many issues not just who gets saved and how, but how the torch gets passed on to the new generation. The director filmed an alternate ending, but I believe what they settled on is perfect. Very well done and deserves a lot more kudos than it's gotten.
