Movie Reviews of The Great GatsbyMovie Review: Keen insights into that Time & those Persons! Summary: 4 Stars
After Years since our first Encounter, I was keenly surprised at the Graphic Descriptions of that Time-frame of Newly Rich among the HAVES and Inner Longings of those who were the Have-Nots!
Barbara and I were Amazed at the Sweep of Acting Ability of Mia Farrow and Bruce Dern! Not nearly as much difference in Redford! If you compare their High-riding parties with the entertainment of today, here were grand displays of emotions and kicking-up of their heels, almost like the Cotton Club or the Blue Note in Chicago!
We were more interested in the music & costumes than Acting or Story plot. There was contrast of the leading characters in their super display of emotions compared to that restraint of Nick Carraway, Tom Buchanan, or the mechanic named Wilson! What an awesome diplay of Personality Contrasts as well as, the short conversational exchanges that were both snide and more cynical than chit-chat between Gatsby and Tom Buchanan!!
All-in-all we were not entirely in the dark with the depression of the ending yet the Narrator, SAM WATERSON, as Nick C. had all the necessary qualities of being Worthy of an Oscar! Never was it an appetizing, inspiring of high hopes, or sentimental movie as was our recent viewing of The Thomas Crown Affair! Retired Chaplain Fred W Hood
Movie Review: Laura Zini Review for Mr. Yochum Summary: 4 Stars
The 1974 Great Gatsby movie is a vivid portrayal of the book written by F. Scott Fitzgerald. The movie follows the book fairly accurately, with only some deviations from the novel. Robert Redford (Gatsby) and Mia Farrow (Daisy) do an excellent job of representing their characters as described in the book. I was disappointed in the character representation of Myrtle Wilson and Tom Buchanan, but was otherwise pleased with the actors. I liked the actress that played Jordan Baker and the actor that played Nick Carraway, and felt that they stuck to their characters as explained in the book.
The movie depicts the decade of the 1920s very well. From the costumes to the scenery to the cars, the 1920s is definitely alive in this movie. At Jay Gatsby's parties, you can really see the culture of the 1920s at its fullest. It is interesting to see the "flapper" girls and the Charleston dance steps. Even the hairstyles of the women highly parallel traditional 1920s styles.
I can't necessarily say that the movie was better than the novel, but then again, that is usually the case with movies made from books. I suggest reading the book first and watching the movie second to reinforce the knowledge gained by it. Overall, the movie is a strong and realistic portrait of the F. Scott Fitzgerald novel.
Movie Review: A Fine Adaptation Summary: 4 Stars
This 1973 film was a good adaptation of F. Scott Fitzgerald's famous novel. Although some of the actors could have been better, I found the film to be faithful to the story and well directed.
The film follows the classic story of Gatsby, a poor man who made a fortune after the Great War and so became the talk of the town. Although Gatsby's wealth could buy anything he wanted, what he really wanted was Daisy: a beautiful but shallow woman whom Gatsby can't get out of his mind. Daisy is now married and lives across from Gatsby's home. Gatsby's lavish home and parties are little more than Gatsby's subconscious wooing of Daisy. But Gatsby was never born in wealth and so wasn't considered 'polite' enough to be with someone like Daisy (Mia Farrow.) This was certainly the opinion of her brute husband (Bruce Dern)who needs to get his jollies on the poor side of town. Gatsby's only true friend is his narrating neighbor (Law & Order's Sam Waterston.)
I found this adaptation to be just fine. The film was faithful to the book, well directed, and complimented with a good cast. Robert Redford plays his role as the humble Gatsby quite well. A good movie to rent or own.
Movie Review: Sam R-M's thoughts on the Gatsby film Summary: 4 Stars
This interpretation of The Great Gatsby portrayed my view of the setting and of Nick very well. The contrast between Gatsby's house and the Valley of the Ashes enlightened my picture of these places when I read about them. As for the characters, I thought Nick Carraway was performed brilliantly. He was the perfect contrast to self-absorbed high class society and portrayed Nick's sense of quiet akwardness. Tom Buchanan should have been a larger and more intimidating character. It said in the book that his muscles could be seen moving through his clothes and that when he walked into a room he filled the doorway, yet in this movie he appears to be too normally built for a football player. Daisy's character annoyed me, though this may have been done on purpose, and her scenes with Gatsby at his house when they are portrayed "in love" were so cheesy that I could not help but laugh. Overall, however, the movie is a great choice for anyone who is seeking a visual portrayal of The Great Gatsby because it follows the book fairly accurately, though I was not pleased with the absense of Owl Eyes in the film. Movie Review: Maura Lacey Period 8 Reveiw Summary: 4 Stars
The movie version of the Great Gatsby was very similar to the book but better. The movie had alot of the same quotes as the book did and allowed you to get a visual representation of what was going on. My favorite character in the movie was definately Jordan Baker. She was most like the Jordan Baker I imagined when reading the book and was cast perfectly for the movie. She was showed how arrogant all of the people in their society were and definately broght the sense of how rich they were to the movie. Nick was cast good too and he proved to be a good actor. The movie is old but yet it seems as if you are watching a fairly new movie. The scenes at Gatsby's parties are very good and really bring out the feelings of the times. Overall, the movie is really worth seeing. It is definately a lot better than the book. If I were to change one thing, I would like to see mrytle be played by a different actress. Other than that though, it was excellent.
