Movie Reviews of The Great Gatsby

Movie Review: Guilt! The Eyes Of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg, O.D. See ALL !
Summary: 4 Stars

F. Scott Fitzgerald presents taut tension and symbolism between Modernism and Victorianism in the 1925's quintessential jazz age of the great American novel, "The Great Gatsby" and this 1974 adaptation of Fitzgerald's novel with Francis Ford Coppola's screenwriting captures the better part of it!

Daisy's green light at the end of her dock that symbolizes all hope and want in not just Gatsby but all people, the "haves" and the "have-nots", guilt and carelessness, living above judgement and consequences, and of course, the eyes of Dr. T.J. Eckleburg over the "valley of the ashes"... All are all beautifully and sadly portrayed.

Mia Farrow as the self centered, one-dimensional Daisy, Bruce Dern as the philandering Tom and Robert Redford as the nouveau riche, enamoured Gatsby turn in quite decent performances.

As Nick says, "They were careless people, Tom and Daisy- they smashed up things and creatures and then retreated back into their money ortheir vast carelessness or whatever it was that kept them together, and let other people clean up the mess they had made."

However, it is Karen Black as Myrtle, Scott Wilson as George and a sublime Sam Waterson cast as the perfect Nick are the highlight of this film along with the musical score, great costuming and elaborate set design.

This is well worth the watch and I enjoy this adaptation more than the A&E presentation, of which I USUALLY favor!

"Gatsby believed in the green light, the orgastic future that year by year recedes before us. It eluded us then, but that's no
matter- tomorrow we will run faster, stretch out our arms farther..... And one fine morning - " (Nick)

Happy Watching!

Movie Review: I Enjoyed This Version of the Great Gatsby
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't know if I agree with most reviwers here. I rather enjoyed this rendition of the great novel by F. Scott Fitzgerald. I just read the book for the first time in my life several weeks prior to watching this film [also for the first time], so it was fresh in my memory. I found the movie to be fairly acurrate to the book in most ways, even in tone.

In my opinion, the novel "The Great Gatsby" is one of those art pieces that, like the Disco music and leisure suits of the 1970s, hasn't dated well. But that, is precisely what keeps it alive now. For better or worse, there are fewer things created during "the roaring twenties" that define the era in present-day peoples' imaginations more than "the Great Gatsby" by F. Scott Fitzgerald.

But what I wonder, is how relevent this story is anymore? Perhaps it's the story of the Great Gatsby that fails to move modern audiences any longer that makes this film not the masterpiece that it should be? I wondered that as I watched this movie. Because all the elements are superb: Robert Redford is inspired as Gatsby and all the casting, the costuming, the music, etc is wonderful here. This is a strong film! In other words, I am suggesting that if the film bores you, so would the original novel likely bore you as well.

The DVD is fine - it isn't a spectacular treatment, nor are there an overwhelming amount of extras, etc. But the picture-quality is nice and the sound is average for a modern-day DVD. I can't call it a five-star DVD restoration, but nor is it a bad treatment either. The low price makes it accesible. It's a perfectly fine DVD.

Movie Review: GREAT GATSBY REVIEW FOR MR. TURNER'S CLASS
Summary: 4 Stars

BOOKS AND FILMS ARE NOT USUALLY EXACTLY THE SAME. IT WOULD BE HARD TO TAKE A TEST ON A BOOK IF YOU HAD ONLY WATCHED THE MOVIE. THE MOVIE THE GREAT GATSBY IS LIKE THE BOOK IN MANY WAYS. IT IS ALSO NOT LIKE IT IN MANY WAYS.
THE GREAT GATSBY TOOK PLACE IN THE 1920'S. THE CHARACTERS ARE ALL EITHER NEW RICH OR OLD RICH CITIZENS OF NEW YORK. THE MAIN CHARACTERS WERE DAISY AND GATSBY. GATSBY IS OBSESSED WITH DAISY. THEY WERE IN LOVE AT ONE POINT, BEFORE HE WENT OFF TO THE WAR. WHEN GATSBY RETURNS FROM THE WAR, HE HOPES HE WILL BE ABLE TO LOCATEDAISY AND LIVE HAPPILY EVER AFTER. WHEN DAISY'S COUSIN NICK IS PUT INTO THE PICTURE GATSBY HAS A CHANCE OF GETTING HIS DREAM BACK. IT IS NOT ALWAYS EASY GETTING WHAT YOU WANT, AND IT CERTAINLY WAS NOT EASY FOR GATSBY. THE ENTIRE MOVIE AND NOVEL REVOLVE AROUND GATSBY TRYING TO GET DAISY BACK.
I DID NOT REALLY KNOW WHAT TO EXPECT OF THE MOVIE. AFTER WATCHING THE MOVIE, I WAS A LITTLE DISAPPOINTED WITH GATSBY'S CHARACTER. HE WAS SO FAKE TO ME, WHICH I GUESS WAS A LITTLE OF WHAT HE WAS TRYING TO PORTRAY. IT WAS STILL A LITTLE TO FAKE FOR ME. DAISY DID A GOOD JOB OF ACTING UPSET. JORDAN BAKER IN THE NOVEL WAS A VERY CARELESS AND CALM PERSON. HER CHARACTER IN THE MOVIE WAS JUST LIKE THAT OF THE BOOK. THE MOVIE WOULD NOT HAD BEEN NEAR AS GOOD WITHOUT NICK. I THINK HIS PART IN THE MOVIE WAS GREAT.
THE MOVIE ITSELF IS THE SAME AS THE NOVEL IN THE WAY THAT NOTHING WAS ADDED. THE MOVIE WAS DIFFERENT FROM THE NOVEL BECAUSE IT LEFT STUFF OUT. EVERYTNIG EXCEPT THE COLROR OF GATSBY'S CAR WAS ACCURATE.

Movie Review: Period 5- The Great Gatsby
Summary: 4 Stars

I thought that the film was a very close representation of the novel. It clearly depicted Fitzgerald's ideas. The cahracters from the book were well represented by the actors. Sam Waterson played Nick very well. He remained simple but was helpful and a good friend. The imperssion you got of Nick in the novel was the same in the film. He was not overly judgmental and basically just an observer. Robert Redford looked and played the part of Jay Gatsby. His semi-deceitful demeanor was clear but not overemphasized. It was interseting that there were some differences with his parts of the movie and the book. They were obvious if you read the book. As for Tom, Bruce Dern was sophisticated, stuck up, hypocritical, jealous, and posessive. He was a perfect imitation of Mr. Buchanon. Even his facial features and posture gave the air of superiority. The actress who played Daisy did a good job of showing Fitzgerald's character's seeming flightiness but somewhat deceptive manner. She was a key actress in the film. Daisy was a very complicated character and would be hard playing her in the movie. I was somewhat thrown off by Jordan's character, however. She was nicer and more honest than I thought she would be. I think that if F Scott Fitzgerald was casting the movie, he would have used the same cast. They understood the character's in the novel and successfully transfered it on screen. The task was hard because they had to put Fitzgerald's written analysis into dialogue throughout the movie.

Movie Review: YOCHUM BOCHUM. by alex sam
Summary: 4 Stars

This movie, unlike many others, was able to captivate the book to minute details. Although there were some differences, the main points were conveyed to the viewer. As I read the book along with the movie I saw that they were essentially one in the same. The director must have had the same passion for the book as the millions of readers who praise its pages. Simply by watching this movie, the viewer was able to walk away with the same knowledge gained in the book. This may not be said for a majority books made into movies. The landscape and location of the movie were hand-in-hand with how I pictured it to be. All in all, this movie struck gold with its overall portrayal of the book.
Personally I did not think the characterization was amazing. I thought that Daisy, Gatsby, and Tom were portrayed just as I imagined. However, Nick was not portrayed as well as he could have been. Nick seemed to convey poorly. He was almost scared and shy. The Nick I imagined was much more opinionated and intelligent. Myrtle, to me, seemed to be too dirty and rugged. I know she was poor, but considering she was able to captivate Tom, I imagined a diamond in the rough. Gatsby acted just as I pictured, as a money obsessed fiend. Daisy was also portrayed as I imagine, as a materialistic bimbo. She cared about one person--herself. This truly was the great American novel.
