Movie Reviews of The Grateful Dead Movie

Movie Review: Get it for the sound!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I have had my copy of The Greatful Dead Movie for about a week now, and I can't believe the quality of this production. The video and especially the sound quality are insane. You can hear every note of the music with pristine clarity. It sounds much better than the Closing of the Winterland DVD, which was also great. I wouldn't review the actual movie other than it really captures the feeling it was going for.

The second disk bonus material is also great. All of the uncut live footage is incredible, and just getting some high quality video footage of 74 Dead is treat. The Other One, China-Rider and Weather Report are highlights. The documentaries offer some insight into what the band was feeling around the time of the break and are very interesting. There is even a long interview with Billy. All in all this is a keeper and well worth money.

Movie Review: An absolute must-have for Grateful Dead fans
Summary: 5 Stars

The Grateful Dead Movie is a two-disc DVD showcasing the famous rock-and-roll band. Disc 1 (132 minutes) offers the movie itself, transferred from its original 35 mm film negative in High Definition and presented in 1.78:1 widescreen aspect ratio. Audio options include the original theatrical audio mix and new Dolby Digital 5.1 and 2.0 audio mixes from the master multi-track tapes. A feature-length commentary with supervising editor Susan Crutcher and film editor John Nutt as well as English subtitles offer an additional extra dimension over VHS copies. Disc 2 (175 minutes) is packed with extensive never-before-seen concert footage, bonus songs, a "making of the animated sequence" documentary, a photo gallery, production notes, and more. An absolute must-have for Grateful Dead fans, filled to the brim with excitement, majesty, and thrilling music.

Movie Review: Still great after all these years
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw this film when it was released back in the mid 1970's. I was in much the same state as many of the attendees of the real thing and enjoyed the piece tremendously - the rendition of "Morning Dew" in this film remains my favorite piece of Dead music and Garcia genius.
Thirty years is a long time in a person's life - much changes. It was, therefore with a smile that I happened upon this DVD and took it home. I wondered whether it would be the same. Happily, it was still wonderful; interestingly enough just as wonderful straight as it was..... The music (Yes, I know there are many acoustically better albums) has all the power/joy/pathos today as it did then, however much we and the world have changed.
"Morning Dew" still makes me smile and sing for hours after.
You died too young, Jerry.

Movie Review: I see Dead people...
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a totally great movie about The Grateful Dead. It really captures what it was like to see the Dead live in concert.

Trust me, I know what I'm talking about. I used to be a total Deadhead. I saw them 587 times in concert.

The only thing missing for me in this movie that I used to see during the actual concerts is the 30 foot tall talking turtle that used to sit next to me at most of the shows. That dude was awesome! He'd sit there and tell me stories about life in Giant Turtle Land and then he'd play air guitar along with Jerry's real guitar playing. Giant Turtle Guy was the best!

Anyway, if you love the Dead, you'll totally love this movie. Get it and get a Grateful groove on...

Movie Review: A perfect Grateful Dead concert experience
Summary: 5 Stars

If you have never seen the Grateful Dead live or never got to see them at their peak, this film is a perfect substitute experience. I will not ramble on about the genius of this band's live performances but suffice it to say that this movie captures the essence of what so many of us love about the band and its music. It also does a good job of capturing the whole Dead concert environment as well. The remastering of this in surround sound adds the unbelievably authentic parameter feelings of a live concert. It is as close to perfection in sound as you will ever get without actually being there. Bravo to the engineers and of course, the Grateful Dead themselves for this most excellent experience, now captured for everyone.
