Movie Reviews of The Grateful Dead Movie

Movie Review: grateful for the superb audio quality on this one
Summary: 5 Stars

If you want a great look into the early-mid seventies era of the Dead, you Neeeeed this dvd. The sound is great. The footage is classic and awesomely typical of the times. Many consider this period of the dead as somewhat of a pinacle. Their playing was tight and had sincere feeling behind it. The Wake of the Flood ('73) and Mars Hotel ('74) albums were somewhat of a change in their sound, but a good one i'd say. And, as always, their set stretched back years, to their first albums, and always included great extended jams.

This DVD set is all that you hoped it would be. The theatrical relase (disc 1) is an 'enlightening' view into the scene surrounding the dead, with great performances intertwined. The bonus material (disc 2) contains over and hour and a half of awesome footage of ONLY songs. And while you can see in some places why this footage was left out (guitars slightly out of tune, and other flubs) it pretty much made the movie for me. There are very minimal crowd shots and all the great solos are closely documented.

You won't even need any outside 'influences' to feel happy watching this one.

As it was said earlier, "Get if for Disc 2", if nothing else.

Movie Review: I got Gas
Summary: 5 Stars

The Grateful Dead Movie is truly a classic. The legendary late, Great Jerry Garcia(1942-1995) originally had an interest in becoming a filmmaker before he started playing music and it's just great to see this work of art and Jerry Garcia's vision fully restored and with bonus footage. (including a DARK STAR!) I've never seen this movie but, being a Deadhead, (or a Deadhead wannabe) I can say that this is not only an awesome movie but the Grateful Dead concert experience. The trippy animation at the beginning of the film before "US Blues" is reason enough to see this work of art. This footage was shot because the Grateful Dead were doing the "farewell concerts" at the late Winterland in October 1974. I'm glad that Mickey Hart, the Grateful Dead's second drummer rejoined the group for this special event. This DVD will make a "head" out of you...boom boom one in a row. I can only hope that there is footage of the Grateful Dead in vaults with Pigpen(1945-1973),the last great frontman of the blues, because that would really prove that the Grateful Dead were the best band in the history of all music.

Movie Review: Irresistable
Summary: 5 Stars

One: This movie captures the Dead live in 1974. Two: It shows them at Winterland, in San Francisco. Three: They sound GREAT!

If you still need more reasons to buy this, the sound quality is as good as 1974 could produce, with a lot of help from the included modern remixes. The film gives us a taste of the whole Grateful Dead experience. And the concert itself is simply an orgy of far-out good feelings, alternative-thinking people doing alternative-thinking things, and a smiling and animated Jerry Garcia who is of course the spark that lights the fire in the hearts and the breeze that rustles all the leaves in all the souls present.

If this movie has a downside, it is this: Some of the newcomers to the Grateful Dead who watch it will be converted into new, true Deadheads, and they will have to begin that lifelong journey living with the sad reality that Jerry is no longer with us. We are left with only recordings, films, and the memory of a Great Spirit who changed the world for the better with his fingertips.

Movie Review: Unbelievable
Summary: 5 Stars

This dvd set is the most prized in my entire collection. The brilliant music and sound quality on this dvd has already been explained enough, I just want to make one comment.

In the bonus songs is a track simply titled "the other one." The song though is part of my favorite music suites ever by the dead. On 10/17/74, during the second set... He's Gone > jam > weirdness > the other one > spanish jam > mind left body jam > the other one > stella blue. The whole thing together is mind boggling. Unfortunately the DVD song only has the tail end of weirdness > the other one > spanish jam > mlbj > too. While this segment is still sublime (especially the gorgeous MLBJ,) it would've been nice to see the whole sequence together.

My point is, don't overlook the bonus tracks, which are magnificent, and also don't skimp on buying the so called "movie soundtrack," which has tons of amazing music not on the dvd, as well as the complete sequence described above.

Movie Review: This *is* the Grateful Dead.
Summary: 5 Stars

This set is really something else. The performances and sound are incredible and, aside from that, it has the best camera/editing work for a music film that I've ever seen. According to legend, the camera men were just as dosed as anyone else in Winterland on these nights and they captured some really wonderful things. You get to see all the lovable, colorful individuals that made up the deadhead community in 1974. The commentary is amusing and insightful as well.

The second disc is chock full of goodies. It features the makings of for the dvd and animation sequence that begins the film and a few other neat little things, but the real highlight here is over an hour and a half of footage from the concert without interruption including a mind blowing Other One jam that really does have everything. It's my personal favorite.

If you ever find a decently priced copy, buy it immediately. It's fantastic. You won't regret it.
