Movie Reviews of The Gospel According to St. MatthewMovie Review: The Best Rendition of the Gospel, EVER Summary: 5 StarsThis is the best rendition of the Gospel that I know of, having seen many others including as far back as the "King of Kings" of De Mille and Griffith's rendition in "Intolerance".
Pasolini outdid himself in the stark simplicity and beauty of inspiration that make up this film from the very first scene to the last. Pasolini's Christ is an activist and a charismatic preacher that would have ran into just as much trouble today as he did then. The details of costume, the architecture, the objects are all carefully selected to project the authenticity of the gospel and all look overwhelmingly real.
This is the antidote to all the Hollywood renditions that have obscured the story or twisted it completely into a fairy tale. My favorite scene is the expulsion of the merchants from the temple where we see Enrique Irazoqui as a virile, infuriated Christ. His acting is superb and just perfect for the role. The last supper is also a superb composition that Caravaggio would have been proud to paint. An absolute triumph that has withstood the test of time and is still unsurpassed today.
Summary of The Gospel According to St. MatthewPier Paolo Pasolini's masterpiece comes to life in color for the first time in this beautifully told film about the life of Jesus Christ according to St. Matthew. The story begins with His birth and illustrates how His teachings attracted not only His disciples, but crowds of believers. When the Parisees, chief priests and elders learn of Jesus, they conspire to have Him arrested, beaten, tried and crucified on the cross. This classic film is a beautiful interpretation of the greatest story ever told. Released in 1964, The Gospel According to St. Matthew marks an important shift away from the gritty urban realism of Pasolini's earlier films towards the visionary imagery of his later work. A committed but far from conformist Marxist, Pasolini took a powerful and immediate approach, with no false piety or sentimentality. Employing a cast drawn largely from the peasantry of Southern Italy, where the film was shot, the action has the feel of a mystery play reenacted for the camera. Enrique Irazoqui's Christ is part folk hero, part political agitator, but always pursuing his destiny with unswerving conviction. The disciples make for vivid contrasts in facial expression, while Susanna Pasolini (mother of) is unforgettable as Mary, distraught at the Crucifixion. The recourse to handheld cameras and zoom sequences is well ahead of its time, while the almost jump-cut editing and diverse soundtrack--including Bach, Mozart and the Missa Luba--enhance the sense of action being experienced as it happens. A classic of post-war cinema which has lost none of its urgent humanity. --Richard Whitehouse
