Movie Reviews of The Goonies

Movie Review: ... * Jerk Alert *...
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Goonies" is my favorite movie of all time. I have to bite my tongue whenever I watch it with anybody because I can literally quote the movie verbatim. I've considered doing a one person stage screen play, but I just can't seem to get that Truffel Shuffel move down. hehe Ever since I saw this movie as a kid, it has taken ahold of my imagination and never let go. I have lost count of how many times I've seen The Goonies now, but somehow, I NEVER get tired of watching the film. It still amazes me how this '80s movie has stood the test of time; albeit the imagination and sheer genius of Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg. Did you know that there was a 20th Anniversary celebration gathering of fans from all over the world back in 2005? They all met in Astoria, Oregon; where The Goonies was filmed back in 1985. Jeff Cohen (Chunk) and Sean Astin (Mikey/Frodo) even showed up for the event. Correy Feldman showed up a few days after the official event was over as well. It has been long rumored that the sequal to The Goonies is in the works, but unfortunatly, it seems that Warner Brothers has killed all hopes and will not relinquish the rights to Donner and Speilberg! Talk about a huge mistake- JERK ALERT; seems that WB has ridden up Troy's Bucket. I could go on and on about this movie, but instead I will elaborate on another Goonies film subject.. the pop soundtrack and the film score.....

"The Goonies" pop soundtrack capures the fun-loving decade of the '80s and listening to these songs makes various scenes from the movie come to mind in vivid detail. My favorite track off the CD is probably REO Speedwagon's "Wherever You're Goin' (It's Alright)". I also quite like Philip Bailey's "Love Is Alive" because that song played during the part in the movie where Troy catapults Brand off the side of the cliff in that little girl's, pink, training bike. Classic! Who could forget Cyndi Lauper's "The Goonies 'R Good Enough" track; not me. I love this song as well, and it brings back some incredible memories of the '80s and from this movie specifically.

NOW.. to address the film score controversy.. There is some debate to whether or not the entire film score was ever released the UNITED STATES. Many say it was simply a bootleg that got around in small circles. (Go to soundtrack.com to learn more about the film score.) That said, I DO know, however, that the film score WAS recorded as a 'world premier recording' on the CD, "The Best Of Adventure". I have this cd, and the Goonies score on it is, quite simply, AMAZING! I'm not kidding, when I played it for the first time, I actually teared up. So nostalgic and beautiful. The recording on this CD is almost 19 minutes long; it was recorded by the City of Prague Philharmonic. This is the ONLY legitimate cd that the entire Goonies film score was ever released on; the booklet in this CD, "Best of Adventure" also confirms that the recording is a 'world premier' for the Dave Grusin Goonies film score.

There are bootlegs being circulated with The Goonies film score on it on eBay. Some of these pirated CD's have so called 'previously unreleased' tracks from the film. These eBay sellers blatantly lie and trick and try to pass these cd's off as original 'imports' from Japan etc. Some people will believe anything, so I am here to set the record straight and tell you the truth. I have even found that one eBay seller from California has gone as far as changing his user ID three times to try to get away with selling a slick looking bootleg. This particular pirated CD is a 2 'gold' CD Goonies Dave Grusin film score that also has a so called gold coin prop replica and two bumper sticker decals along with the pirated music. I am keeping a record of what he has been up to. As an AVID official Goonies collector, eBay seller and also a professional Graphic Designer, I hate to see people getting ripped off by greedy liars who know Photoshop too well and who visit Knikos too often. I could go on about exactly how these bootlegs were constructed and believe me I could whip up an exact repliac within a day.. yup, even down to the printed on gold discs, 'high quality' decals, 'unreleased tracks', photo booklet and the gold coin replica. Anyways, consider this information as a buyer beware, word to the wise, warning. All cd's other than Best of Adventure with The Goonies film score are pirated. So there is no confusion, there IS a legitimate Japanese POP soundtrack import, which you can see from the Amazon picture above, but there is NO such thing as a Japanese film score CD or any other film score CD other than "Best Of Adventure".

Who knows if the entire score will ever officially be released in the USA as well, but, in my opinion, to have found the "Best Of Adventure" cd is even better than finding One Eyed Willie's rich stuff. While I think of it, who knows whether Warner Brothers will FINALLY let Richard Donner and Steven Spielberg make an amazing sequal to The Goonies. All of the stars are up for it as well, but NOOO, Warner Brothers had to go and screw it up! (Okay, enough stealing Mouth's lines). haha.

I really feel that, in order to get the film score released officially in the USA, and also in order to get the sequal made (before everybody starts looking like One Eyed Willie) is THE PEOPLE. The people like us who love this movie and who dream BIG. Like Mikey said, it's OUR time down here; so start writing, Warner Brothers, people; let your voices be heard. It's our time.. Never Say Die.

You may be surprised to discover that the director of the Lethal Weapon movies and scary horror flick The Omen, Richard Donner, also produced and directed this classic children's adventure (which, by the way, was written by Donner's screen-wizard friend Steven Spielberg). Then again you may not. The Goonies, like Donner's other movies, is the same story of good versus evil. It has its share of bad guys (the Fratelli brothers and their villainous mother), reluctant-hero good guys (the Walsh bothers and their gang of friends), and lots of corny one-liners. Like in an old-fashioned Hardy Boys or Nancy Drew plot, the Goonies need to solve a problem: a corrupt corporate developer has bought out their neighborhood and plans to flatten all their homes. Luckily, the beloved gang stumbles on a treasure map. In the hopes of finding the treasure to buy back their houses, the Goonies embark on their quest through underground passages, aboard pirate ships, and behind waterfalls. This swashbuckling and rollicking ride was also a great breeding ground for a couple of child actors who went on to enjoy numerous successes in adulthood: Sean Astin (Rudy, Encino Man) and Martha Plimpton (Pecker, 200 Cigarettes). --Samantha Allen Storey
