Movie Reviews of The Girl Next DoorMovie Review: "Flowers in the Attic" times a Million!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
Based on the Jack Ketchum novel.
Based on real events.
Based on an american atrocity.
If you've read the aforementioned novel, you know what you're in for.
This is an excellent adaptation,
almost identical to the novel,
(except what used to be hot poker is now a blow-torch....yikes)
If you haven't read the novel,
this flick is a cinematic punch to the gut of your soul.
You will be disgusted,
you will be touched,
you may even find yourself crying into your sweaty palms.
This film accurately portrays a time when everything was kept behind closed doors,
when family problems were dealt with by the family.
And it does such a good job with what its trying to set out to accomplish,
that it'll have you disgusted with man-kind by the time the credits roll.
This is horror on its most depressing level.
The horror of reality.
MORAL OF THE STORY:
Even suburbia has it's demons
Movie Review: Its What You Do Last That Counts Summary: 5 Stars
I began to watch this movie very aware of what was gonna happen. I read and loved the book so much. I thought this was gonna be like most other novel adaptations in that it is very different from the book, but I was surprised. Although not exactly like the book it was pretty damn close, I just wish the ending from the book had been used but the one in the movie fits it just fine. Im actually kind of glad that they didnt keep every scene of beating and torture from the book because that would just have been overdoing what we already know is going on. The performances were great. I imagine it must have been extremely challenging for Blythe Auffarth to play Meg, but she pulls it off quite nicely as does Blanche Baker playing the evil Ruth Chandler. So all in all I was very happy with the movie. Just like the book, this movie is sometimes difficult to watch and there is no redeeming value so it is rather grim, but thats what makes it so real and great. Bottom line-Watch This. 9.4 outta 10
Movie Review: An Honest Depiction of Adolscence Summary: 5 Stars
There's a reason why the "The Girl Next Door" is disturbing: The nonchalance with which the other children approach seeing the torture and mutilation of one of their peers is brutally truthful right down to the bone. Childhood is a period without conscience, without empathy, when the id still reigns supreme. In the film, Davy stands alone as the exception to the rule. He has some adult qualities insofar that he's more spiritually and emotionally developed than other children. He has acquired a measure of compassion. However, he's too fearful to take a stand. Rather, he rather naively resorts to trying to help Meg escape rather than go against peer pressure in a manner that is obvious. This film is perhaps the potent extract of the childhood id, and one of the more honest coming-of-age stories. The question remains: does evil "Aunt Ruth" bear more responsibility than the little monsters who torture her niece at her bequest? The film's answer is an unequivocal "no."
Movie Review: Back To The 50s... Summary: 5 Stars
THE GIRL NEXT DOOR is 1950s American nirvana turned inside out- blood, intestines, bones and all. It's LEAVE IT TO BEAVER infused w/ SYBIL (just imagine if SYBIL's mum had had sons to assist her). I never read Ketchum's book, but I do know the true story upon which it is based. The basic outline of this fictional account is pretty much the same as reality: a young girl is tortured to death by a woman, her sons, and neighborhood children. If this sounds intolerable to you, then I recommend that you NOT watch this film! To me, the most terrifying aspect of TGND lies in its setting and presentation. The 1950s are fondly, dreamily remembered (especially by hollywood) as a time of "innocence". Here, this mythical decade is ripped open, so the stinking bile can bubble out. This is presented in stark, increasingly nauseating terms. I do consider it a classic, but it's certainly not for everyone...
Movie Review: A Disturbing Look Into a Warped Mind! Summary: 5 Stars
Before you even think about buying this DVD or even renting it, you'd better be comfortable with (incest, torture, rape, bondage, child abuse, and manipulation) all rolled up into one sick package. I truly mean that. This was one act that was hard to swallow and this is coming from a horror fan.
I guess what made this film, based on Ketchum's novel, chilling is the fact that it was inspired by true events. You just never know who that person is that you pass by in the market or on the street. You just never know who your neighbor is. That's one of the lessons you'll learn from this movie.
Please don't allow your kids to watch this with you. And men, ask your girlfriends or wives if they're going to be comfortable watching something like this instead of surprising them. You may end up in the dog house for sure.
