Movie Reviews of The Gift

Movie Review: 5 stars for the movie - 1 star for the Rex Reed [hopeful]!
Summary: 5 Stars

I really enjoyed this movie. No, not because of Katie Holmes gracing us with what my 14-year-old son will be thrilled by while I'm a way at work.

Though that was kind of nice.

Sure we've seen these characters before in countless movies, as well as the plot. But hey, it isn’t Shakespeare or Bergman! What were you expecting?

This movie is a nice little sleeper that crept in the theaters and was buried by the over-hyped blockbusters. It's a simple, little movie that deserves some attention by those who love a simple thrill on a Saturday night in front of the television. Not by pretentious Pauline Kael-Rex Reed types who spend too much time in NYU film school and spend their boring, elitist lives sipping espresso while mindlessly discussing the meaning of Bergman’s “The Seventh Seal.”

Which by the way, is a great movie.

Movie Review: Supernatural Suspense
Summary: 5 Stars

The gift is a quite good movie.
It is a ghost story, but not an obvious one.
It is more of a psychic detective kind of story along the lines of series Medium. While some of the performances are better than others in this film, Cate Blanchett, is as usual wonderful in the lead role, but the performance by Keanu Reeves, as a bad guy red-neck wife beating cheating husband, is the real surprise, for me this may be his best performance ever. Hillary Swank as the abused wife is very good, and Giovoni Ribisi, is very, very believable as the troubled client of the psychic. Oh, and Katie Holmes is beautiful, but that's about it.

So if you want a movie that is spooky enough to keep you interested, and the only evil is in the character of the characters, then this is a good movie for you.

Movie Review: In a small town.
Summary: 5 Stars

The Gift starring the striking and extremely talented Cate Blanchett, is a thrilling murder mystery. First of all, what a great all-star cast, Keanu Reeves, Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank, Giovanni Ribsi, and Greg Kinnear. Blanchett plays Annie, a fortune teller. She has two boys and she is a widow, her "gift" is put to the ultimate test after a wealthy but sexually promiscuous woman (Holmes) is brutually murdered but who was she murdered by? Annie must uncover the awful truth and she makes some enemies along the way especially the locals who think she's a witch. This movie was co-written by Billy Bob Thorton, sometimes you forget what a talented man he really is. I highly recommend Checking The Gift out. Beautiful location, great southern story, and a fabulous ending. Enjoy!

Movie Review: It Wins All My Awards
Summary: 5 Stars

I was sitting on the edge of my seat throughout this entire movie. It was suspensful and thrilling, and the horror angle to it was kept classy while it still managed to have me screaming.
I saw this movie long before I knew who Giovanni Ribisi was, but as soon as I realized he was in it, I rewatched it and was amazed. Buddy Cole (played by Giovanni) is so well done that I couldn't think of him in any other role. It was amazing - as was Cate Blanchett's Annie, and, though I don't really like her, Hillary Swank's character.
I can't believe this movie didn't gain millions of awards. It is so classy and well done, and the characters are so well developed! Shame on the Academy Awards for not devoting their lives to this movie! ;-)

Movie Review: Fantastic Acting Saves This Film
Summary: 5 Stars

I give this movie 5 stars based solely on the acting, casting and photography. The "out of character" casting and incredible acting by Cate Blanchett, Giovanni Rosini and Hilary Swank make this movie a must see.

This a paranormal film, explaining the title. I tend to find such movies amazing or rediculous. This is one of the few that lies between (just short of amazing).

For me, the movie itself seems either too short or too long for the story to hold together. IMHO, the story was longer and cut down in editing to meet requirements, or the writers and/or director focused on one part of the story and character development, and realized later that certain scenes were required to tell the tell the whole story.
