Movie Reviews of The Gift

Movie Review: Wonderfully Spooky
Summary: 5 Stars

I loved this movie so much, I saw it 4 times at the cinema. The all round cast of Keanu Reeves, Cate Blanchett, Hilary Swank, Greg Kinnear, Katie Holmes and Giovanni Ribisi gave it just the right mix to make it work.

I was very impressed by Keanu Reeves' performance as Donnie Barksdale, an overbearing, wife-beating redneck. I could tell Keanu rose to the challenge of such a demanding role. The abuse to his poor wife Valerie [Hilary Swank] was very realistic and Keanu had me scared.

I enjoyed Ms Blanchett as Annie Wilson. You can realy sympathise with her situation ~ losing a husband so young and having 3 boys to look after, trying to make ends meet by card reading. It didn't come across as hammy at all. She is a TOP actress.

The overall effects of the film are outstanding [Good 'ol Sam Raimi] and you don't notice this film was made on a shootstring budget.

The accompanying soundtrack is a MUST BUY. Although, not all the songs listed are in the actual film, it doesn't matter. It just enhances the enjoyment of this film. One of the best soundtracks around.

GO BUY THIS MOVIE!!

Movie Review: By far one of the best movies out there. period.
Summary: 5 Stars

The Gift is a chilling tale set in the south written by Billy Bob Thornton, the talented man that also wrote Sling Blade.
First off, it is IMPOSSIBLE FOR ANYONE TO GIVE THIS MOVIE LESS THAN 3 STARS. Why? Because of the incredible cast. Here, you'll find probably one of the best casts ever. It has Cate Blanchett, Hilary Swank, Greg Kinnear, an actor whom I can't remeber his name but who is brilliant and Keannu Reeves. Keannu Reeves? A good actor? Damn straight. He was brilliant in this movie and deserved an oscar nomination for best supporting actor. I am not kidding. His performance was remarquable!
The movie is about a widow, mother of 3, making her money as a psychic. But, she gets involved with a woman whose abusive boyfriend is ready to do anything. This psychic is a scared mother that only seems to be loved and watched over by one person. And only one. You'll find that one out on your own.
This movie is packed with suspense that had me on the edge of my seat. So, watch this brilliant movie that I will definitely add to my collection.

Movie Review: Scary!
Summary: 5 Stars

Living among the shadowy swamps and Spanish moss of rural Georgia is Annie Wilson (Cate Blanchette), a psychic who reads cards for believers. When the town belle goes missing, Annie starts seeing flashes of the girl's death, leading police to her body and helping arrest the local bully (Keanu Reeves).

This spooky and scary thriller was directed by Sam Raimi and co-written by Billy Bob Thornton. The cast is full of talent, including Hillary Swank, Giovanni Ribisi, Greg Kinnear, and Katie Holmes and they are all wonderful. Even Reeves is convincing as the menacing redneck villain. But it's Cate Blanchette's movie all the way; she captures her character's southern accent and vulnerability perfectly and is immediately interesting and sympathetic. We know her "gift" of visions will put her in mortal peril, but the identity of the killer remains a mystery until the end. The story is full of likely suspects, thunder claps, and enough things going bump in the night to keep you on the edge of your seat. Highly recommended for suspense fans.

Movie Review: Honest Film About A Southern Taboo
Summary: 5 Stars

This movie was made in Savannah, Ga. If you saw Midnight In The Garden, you are already aware of the 'other' presence there of magic, obeah and other supernatural events. Ribisi is just incredible in this film. I really like this guy enormously. He gives 1000 percent in every performance. Ms. Blanchett shines as the gal with the gift. While the story is very over the top, all of the people depicted are right on. I did get a few phone calls from back home (Savannah) asking me if I had anything to do with this film inasmuch as I am known for having the gift, myself. Nope. Not a thing. But I did very much enjoy watching the film and understanding how difficult it is to be special in a small city. Seeing Katie Holmes topless was rather a shock, but this was before Tom came on the scene. Greg Kinnear gives a low-key, endearing but really honest performance. I won't give the ending away but you will be surprised. Enjoyable movie to watch on a rainy weekend night.

Movie Review: EXCELLENT THRILLER/MYSTERY
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie was definatelty worth watching. It left me on the edge through out it and jumpy making me guess, guess, and guess again til the end. It is a drama full of thriller and a very well made mystery. I gotta say, if you haven't seen this movie yet, you should go out and rent it. I'm gonna purchase it on DVD this weekend.

Cate Blanchett plays Annie Wilson who is a physic who sees things before and after they happen. She tries to help out one client played by Hilary Swank when her abusive husband Donnie played by Keanu Reeves gets in the middle and threatens Cate to stop. And then threatens her kids. When a local women Jessica King Played by Katie Holmes disappears after having an affair early that evening with Donnie. Donnie ends up getting accused. From then on the movie will leave on your seat wondering if Donnie is innocent or not? I know the answer to that only cause I seen the movie. So what are you waiting for. Go out and rent the DVD.
