Movie Reviews of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

Movie Review: Everyone's dream film, falling in love with a ghost.
Summary: 5 Stars

Even if you are not a romantic, you can enjoy the subtle courtship of the belligerant sea captain ghost, played by Rex Harrison, and the beautiful composed lady of the house, Gene Tierny. This movie is for everyone who is tired of the blatant sex and instant lovemaking on the big screen (and small screen) nowadays. You will enjoy this subtle departure into the past, when people respected each other's desires, and the buildup to lovemaking was often just as pleasurable as the lovemaking itself. That is the case here. The two awkwardly opposed lovers, Harrison and Tierny, are evenly matched in passion and stubborness, yet Tierny waits her whole lifetime in chastity just to die a natural death so she can live in eternity with her true love, a ghost. This is no cheap throw-away Hollywood romance. This is true love's journey into eternity.

Movie Review: Time can never dim her beauty.
Summary: 5 Stars

The editorial review above does a fine job of detailing the plot. Quite simply, this is a classic movie that withstands the test of time. Even being filmed in Black and White helps lend mystery to story. It has truth about relationships between men and women that remain to this day. Men like it because The Captain (Rex Harrison) is a man's man who has lived a man's life. Women like that, and like the fact that Lucy (Gene Tierney) is a woman who wants to do things her own way; and that this movie very accurately portrays pieces of a woman's world - women not just in conflict, but in harmony, support, and - in the case of one character - uneasy mutual understanding. How many movies do you love that your parents also love? This is one of those. A really perfect, romantic, ghost story.

Movie Review: A Great Classic - Highly Recommended
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Ghost and Mrs. Muir" is one of the classic movies that I picked up to show my two teens. We have been trying to expose them to great movies and this one rates very highly, indeed.

This movie is a love story, complete with one of the most complicated love triangles ever. The plot follows the recently widowed Lucy Muir (played by the wonderful Gene Tierney) as she tries to strike out on her own, renting a house haunted by the ghost of Captain Gregg (Rex Harrison is fantastic in this role). Also, look for a very young Natalie Wood as the daughter (not nearly enough screen time).

Both of my kids enjoyed the movie, admittedly my daughter more so than my son, and it was great to revisit this classic once again!

Highly Recommended!

Movie Review: Movies from Amazon.com
Summary: 5 Stars

What is great about Amazon is the large selection of dvds and cds from around the world. When I look for movies or music, I can choose from a wide variety of prices and conditions. Sometimes I want to give a gift that is new and other times get only a disc at a very low cost for myself. There are also many choices in shipping prices and speed of delivery. Now I can afford to have a video library and get the rare music I've always wanted. It doesn't get better than this.
The Ghoast and Mrs. Muir is a wonderful adventure into the other side of life. How love endures through eternity. These are great classics that we used to have to wait years to see on tv. Not only is the story compelling but the scenic beauty of life on the coast of England is heart warming.

Movie Review: When he says
Summary: 5 Stars

I melt. A lovely, impoverished widow comes to roost at Capt. Greggs' cottage by the sea. Long rumored to be haunted, Lucy Muir, her young daughter ( played by darling little Natalie Wood ) and their loyal servant settle in, only to find a charming home and Lucy finds her Captain. Protective and yet impatient, Capt. Gregg assists the lovely Lucy to become free of her impossible in-laws and financial insecurity...and also in finding love and surviving a betrayal. I won't spoil it for you, except to say the dashing captain and the beautiful widow form one of filmdoms' most cherished couples. A timeless and romantic story - this makes the modern day Meg Ryan and Julia Roberts romantic movies pale in comparison. Do yourself a favor and see this one !
