Movie Reviews of The Ghost and Mrs. Muir

Movie Review: An unvarnished love story
Summary: 5 Stars

Widowed Lucy Muir (Gene Tierney) is being stifled by female in-laws. In her efforts to escape she needs to find something affordable for her and her daughter Anna (Natalie Wood.) It turns out to be a perfect (large) cottage by the see with the view obscured by a knarly monkey tree. Soon she realizes she is not a lone. The ghost of the former owner, Captain Daniel Gregg (Rex Harrison), refuses to give up the house. Lucy also refuses to be frightened off. So the have to make arrangements. In the process they get to know each other and form affection. Looks like Lucy's funds are running out; so she with the help of the captain (a ghost writer) writes his memoirs as "Blood and Swash" to be published. In the process of getting the book published she meets a not so dead Uncle Neddie (George Sanders.) (Exit Captain Gregg) Uncle Neddie has a few surprises of his own. Now she is starting to believe she made up the captain. Years later here daughter now grown (Vanessa Brown) will tell her that she too knew the captain.

You will want to watch and see how all this comes about and find out how it will all turn out.

Movie Review: A Ghosty Classic
Summary: 5 Stars

When I watched this classic chesnut on my DVD player, I watched it with the commentary track by Jeanine Bassinger & Kenneth Geist and then i watched again without. I gain more insight into the film from the commentary, so it made the regular showing more interesting and more valued. I think you will too.

The film in Black & White, done in shadows and depth. It is better than more color films than it needs to the color to convey its message. The script by Philip Dunne seem litarary in scope and langauge

The actors Gene Tierney, Rex Harrison, George Sanders and Natalie Wood are first rate in this gentle love story. This romantic comedy does not seem age, even in black & white. The music score by composer Bernard Herrmann will haunt you long after the film is over... it seem like the music is another character in the film.

Other than the commentary tracks, there is a Biography of Rex Harrison from A & E's biography series as an extra

Great film, worth seeing over and over again..especially with those you love

Movie Review: very nice DVD version of Great Romantic Film
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a wonderful romantic fantasy that tells the story of young widow (beautiful Gene Tierney)who moves into the seaside house of the late Captain Gregg (played with bluster by Rex Harrison). The captain first tries to scare the widow away, but soon they team up so that she can stay at the house. They both fall in love with the other, but neither can express their love to the other. The ghost leaves Mrs. Muir (and blots her memory of him), but they are ultimatley reunited in a very touching scene at the end of the film with her death. The film has a wonderfully atmospheric score by Bernard Herrmann (I believe it was his favorite) and a great performance by the caddish George Sanders. This charming film is a most definite buy!

The DVD has a very sharp, crisp printing of the films with excellent sound - the commentaries that accompany the film are very good and informative, providing a lot of informaiton on how the film was shot and also how Herrmann scored the film. There is a nice one-hour biography on the career on Rex Harrison, along with the usual theatrical trailer.

Movie Review: THE HANDSOME, SEA CAPTAIN GHOST, AND THE BEAUTIFUL WIDOW, FALL IN LOVE!
Summary: 5 Stars

I just loved this movie! It is wonderful! The beautiful widow (Lucy), and her little girl, and Lucy's housemaid, leave London, to get away from Lucy's in-laws, to start a new life, and live by the ocean.

Lucy buys a pretty house ,that is haunted by a rough, loud , and handsome ghost, who was a sea captain (Captain Gregg).Captain Gregg loves to scare people off, but he could not scare Lucy off, and she won his respect. He let her stay, and they ended up falling in love, and he helped Lucy earn a income by getting her to write a book about his life.

Then a new man enters Lucy's life, a real man, not a ghost, and it changes Lucy forever, and it makes Captain Gregg, decide to leave her, only to return once more, because he loves her so! I highly recommend this movie! Eventhough, the movie is in black and white, the movie location by the sea was so beautiful, and breathtaking! It was awesome even in black and white! This is a must see movie, and a special love story!

Movie Review: What we've missed Lucia
Summary: 5 Stars

This is much more than a terrific ghost tale or a wonderful love story. It's one of the 100 greatest films ever made.

It's boasts a very good performance by Gene Tierney and another stylish one from George Sanders. Also it has one of the most haunting scores ever by the greatest of all film composers, Bernard Herrmann. This is one of his best and that's saying oh so much. Joseph Mankiewicz (All About Eve, A Letter to Three Wives, No Way Out) shows his ability early in his career to excel in every genre. He's not mentioned as often as Stevens or Kazan or Wilder but he's just as good as them. Here's some proof.

But the real reason this movie is such a success is the same reason Anna and the King of Siam and My Fair Lady are also part of the 100 greatest films of all time, Rex Harrison. Captain Gregg has to infuse love into this story or it's lost. Rex does this, as he does in Anna and Lady, to the nth degree making this achingly beautiful.
