Movie Reviews of The Ghost Breakers

Movie Review: "I am the family detainer", Alex
Summary: 5 Stars

Lawrence Lawrence Lawrence (Bob Hope) a radio personality threat reveals the inner working of the local gangs seems to have stepped over the line. While attempting to extricate himself he apparently dispatches a stranger, threat must be shooting at him. In his attempt to escape the situation, he runs into a more deadly situation.

Mary Carter (Paulette Goddard) inherits a castle in Cuba. Someone wants to buy it other's warn her of strange things that may mean her ultimate demise. Lawrence Lawrence stumbles into Mary's predicament, as he is ex-truncated from her apartment and destined for Cuba.

To save Mary's life Lawrence goes to her castle first to confront a Zombie, bats (on strings, is not HD and Blu-ray great on a 46" screen), a ghost and something a little more sinister.

Will Lawrence survive, will he learn the secret of the castle if any and will we see Paulette Goddard running around screaming in her swimsuit and torn robe?

The film has held up well however the version I watched could stand some re-mastering. It is interesting to recognize a very young Anthony Quinn as the twins Ramon Mederes/Francisco Mederes. It also took some time to see behind the mustache of Geoff Montgomery to find Richard Carlson of all those Sci-Fi films as "It Came from Outer Space" (1953, and "Creature from the Black Lagoon" (1954).

It Came From Outer Space

Creature From the Black Lagoon

The Cat And The Canary

Movie Review: You Can't Go Wrong With This Movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I first saw The Ghost Breakers when I was a kid...One moment as I digress...It was on the Family Film Festival, a regular weekend movie show staring Tom Hatten. He would interview his guest which may have been an actor, writer, producer of the movie he was going to show, he'd give a synopsis of the plot, show the film, and then come back to close out the show and wet our appetites for the following week. The day he happened to show this film, it was raining, it was perfect!.....Now back to the movie....It is classic black and white, with Hope at his best for comedy. There is murder, mystery, intrigue, romance, and comedy, everything you could ever want in a movie. I don't want to put in any spoilers so I will only tell you, YOU NEED TO SEE THIS MOVIE!!! Follow Hope and Goddard as they get mixed up with the wrong group of people, travel with them to Cuba and Goddard's inherited haunted house. Willie Best puts in a teriffic performance. This movie is a hidden jewel. Rent it, Buy it, Borrow it, Give it as a gift! A good amount of bonus material as well.

If you like this movie you'll also like The Cat and The Canary albeit much harder to find. The same people who made this movie made that one as well, along with Hope and Goddard, the comedy isn't as rampant but still funny, a little darker too.

Movie Review: Bob with Paulette...PRICELESS!
Summary: 5 Stars

Bob Hope's career was marginally initiated in 1938 when he sang "Thanks for the Memory". The next year he teamed with Bing and made "Road to Singapore". This was a good start. His talent was recognized, apparently, because, among other projects, he was teamed with Paulette Goddard in the very delightful "Cat and the Canary". The chemistry was absolute. Studio ideas as they were, put them in "The Ghost Breakers", and it's no end of fun. It's certainly silly, and the racism involved wasn't meant to be offensive, merely a sign of the times. What's wonderful is that great chemistry between Hope & Goddard. Hope, a devout Republican, had a chance to knock the Democrats (the zombies...mindlessly doing what they're told); fun bad guys, charming mysterious persons, like Anthony Quinn & Richard Carlson & Paul Henried. Jokes are fun, no one is spared, and it was Hope & Goddard's second best moment. The best is "The Cat and the Canary", and I'm really waiting for this clever, original film to be released on DVD. Anyone else agree?

Movie Review: Classic Bob Hope and classic Damsel in Distress
Summary: 5 Stars

Following up on the success of Cat and the Canary, Paramount once more sent Bob Hope and Paulette Goddard into a haunted house. Better production values and a stronger supporting cast made it one of the most watchable of the former's films. Bob is his quintessential wise-wisecracking self while Paulette gives vent to the screams and pluck which were required of the Lady faced by Unknown Dangers. She is more than enough of an attraction to make any film hero face the most terrible demons (Zombies in this case)for the sake of winning her hand. Paul Lukas, Richard Carlson and a very young looking Anthony Quinn, handily give support, while Willie Best, Bob's "Man", probably has the most substantial 'A' picture role in his career. If seeing a stereotyped Negro manservant in most scenes of a film disturbs you, then you had better avoid this one.
In sum, one of Bob Hope's classics, with nothing offered but laughs and a spook or two. Should still be an entertaining interlude for most folks

Movie Review: The BEST Bob Hope Movie EVER!!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

I saw this movie AGES ago and I remember laughing so hard I was crying and had stomach pains at the same time. This is, by far, probably the BEST Bob Hope movie ever! I'm so glad I found it on Amazon so can enjoy this timeless classic again and again and again. Bob Hope & Paulette Goddard have a wonderful chemistry and the writers were pure genius! It's those little one-line zingers that really makes this movie awesome. Bob Hope as Lawrence Lawrence Lawrence (Lawarence 3 times as Alex call him) is hilarous! "Go to the window at six o'clock in the morning, open it, climb IN, go to bed." or the radio commercial he so butchers in the beginning or going to see Frenchie DuVall so he can "give it to him straight". Another great line, "Is that you?" in the hotel full of shady characters, Bob Hope's reply, "No. No, it's not me." Pure writing genius! So glad I was able to add this to my collection. I will enjoy it for YEARS to come!
