Movie Reviews of The Garden of AllahMovie Review: Love in the desert once again Summary: 5 Stars
Marlene Dietrich is back in the desert in this David Selznick-produced melodrama. After her father's death she comes to Algeria to start life anew. There she meets Charles Boyer, a Trappist monk who has fled the order and broken his vows, though Dietrich doesn't learn this about him until the end. They share some adventures and eventually fall in love and marry. On their honeymoon they encounter a French officer (Alan Marshall) who reveals Boyer's secret; he decides to return to the monastery and Dietrich says farewell to him forever at its gates. The theme of the picture fits well with the setting, and there's a mysterious, deterministic air about the proceedings that is quite compelling (Max Steiner's musical score helps greatly in this department). Everything is done, of course, to bring out Dietrich's beauty, but she and the movie itself are much more than just a modern costume piece for her. Filmed in early Technicolor, the picture is a handsome production all around.
Movie Review: BRILLIANT COLORS Summary: 5 Stars
At a time when making black and white movies was the norm, The Garden of Allah stands out on its own as it was made in 1936 in gorgeous color. I have nothing against black and white movies, as a matter of fact, I'm a fan of the old movies, but this movie would not be as effective if it wasn't in color. The strength of this movie lies in the outstanding sceneries just bursting with color. The crimson yellowish Sahara desert during sunset, seductive nights under dark purplish blue skies filled with thousands of sparkling jewel like stars and let's not forget the gorgeous and colorful flowing wardrobe of Domini Enfilden played by Marlene Dietrich. Charles Boyer plays the tourtured monk, Boris Androvsky and the two of them are caught in a whirlwind of passion for eachother in the hot desert. So, sit back, relax and let the movie transport you to another time and place. Enjoy!
Movie Review: The garden of allah Summary: 5 Stars
The color and restoration of this film is really beautifull.I purchased this film just to see what some of the earlier technicolour films looked like and was not disappointed one bit.ths story is good and I plan to have another viewing shortly.I reccomend this movie to any one who loves the classics as I do.
Movie Review: In Glorious Technicolor Summary: 5 Stars
I wasn't sure how good the color would be since this film is nearly 75 years old. I shouldn't have worried about it because technicolor holds up very well. This film HAS TO BE close to the images that people saw back in 1936.
I'm very pleased with my purchase!
Movie Review: BEAUTIFUL Summary: 5 Stars
This picture is the first movie entirely in color, and is beatiful. The story is simple: a monk in conflict with his faith meets a lovely lady who confuses him more. The subject is touched with tact and in a delicate way. Very recomandable. Timeless.
