Movie Reviews of The Frighteners

Movie Review: A GERAT HORROR/FUNNY MOVIE
Summary: 5 Stars

THIS MOVIE IS SO AWSOME. I USUALLY HATE HORROR MOVIES BUT I CAN WATCH THIS MOVIE WITHOUT BEING SCARD. I REMBER SETTING IN MY DEN WITH MY MOM AND DAD WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8 OR 9 AND SEEING THIS ONE PART IN THE MOVIE WHICH I THINK IS FUNNY: FRANK BANNESTER(FOX) IS IN THIS GRAVEYARD WITH A GHOST WHO IS AT HIS OWN FURNAL. I REMBER SEEING THE GHOST NAME:RAY LINSKY BEING BURRIED "ALIVE" WHEN HE IS DEAD IN HIS OWN GRAVE WHILE FRANK WATCHES. FINALLY FRANK GRABS HIM AND GETS HIM OUT. MY MOM CHANGED THE CHANNEL BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT I WOULD GET SCARD.

SO ABOUT 3 OR 4 YEARS AFTER I SAW THAT PART I SAW THE MOVIE ON TV AND WATCHED IT AND LOVED IT MUCH. I HAD A SLEEP-OVER AND I RENTED THIS MOVIE ALL MY FRIENDS WERE AFRAIDE TO WATCH IT BUT THEY GOT INTO IT BUT ON SOME PARTS WE ALL SCREAMED. AT THE END OF THE MOVIE ALL THE GIRLS LOVED IT. NOW THEY KEEP TELLING ME IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE. AND IN THE MORNING WE ALL PUT NUMBERS ON OUR HEADS AND WENT RUNNING AROUND THE HOUSE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A SLEEP-OVER RENT THIS MOVIE!

Movie Review: bizzare, hyperactive, brilliant!
Summary: 5 Stars

peter jackson's horror masterpiece, The Frighteners, is so unusual it almost defies description or definition.

it was billed as slap-stick horror/comedy, along the lines of something like Night of the Living Dead. indeed, there are several funny instances and characters - the good ghosts, for example - and Michael J. Fox is a comedian. but that's about as useful as that classification is; the movie possesses the postmodern hyperactivity of a comedy, but not the tone.

the grim reaper/serial killer figure is truly terrifying; his motivation is realistic - crazy, yes, but not unbelievable. the style of filming often matches the best film noirs - in fact, the incongruous detective reminds me strongly of Dale Cooper from Twin Peaks.

and the location - has there ever been a more apt setting more such a bizzare movie?! the strikingly angular cliffs, the deep bay, the ubiquitous fog,...i cant praise the location-finder enough - i'd love to visit that place someplace. it actually subsumes the characters, it's so striking!

Movie Review: Be afraid, but not to afraid
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first saw this on the television I was expecting dark humour coupled with emense amounts of blood and gore along the lines of Bad Taste and Braindead(Known to Americans as Dead Alive). Then I heard it was only a 15 (somewhere in between a PG-13 and R)so I began to wonder if it was worth watching, I decided to give it a chance and I'm glad I did because I would have missed out on a great movie.
The story follows the miss-adventures of would be Exorcist Micheal J Fox, as he scams the public with his mock excorisms. But He can actually see ghosts and three of them help him with him scam. But soon people in town start dying and it looks like the murderer is death himself. Wrongly accussed of the murders by the extremely strage detective Fox's character must solve the murders before he gets sent down for them.
This film isn't all seriousnous though the three ghosts who befriend Fox provide some ammusing jokes and the overall tone of the movie is generally light hearted fun.

Movie Review: Underrated gem from Peter Jackson
Summary: 5 Stars

Practically bashed by critics everywhere when released in 1996, the Frighteners can be appreciated today as an underrated gem. After crafting a landmark gorefest with Dead Alive and scoring a hit among critics with Heavenly Creatures, future Lord of the Rings trilogy director Peter Jackson directed this wildly inventive and surprisingly innovative film starring Michael J. Fox as a psychic investigator who, with the help of three ghost pals, runs a phony ghost busting business. Soon enough, people are getting picked off by Death himself, and it's up to Fox to find out what's really going on. So much is going on in the Frighteners that it's easy for the film to become incoherent, but it's exciting visuals and special effects, along with the performance of Fox and the energetic direction of Jackson, make this film a surprise gem that should be (and very well may be) a cult classic. The rest of the cast includes R. Lee Ermy, Jake Busey, and genre stalwart Jeffrey "Re-Animator" Combs.

Movie Review: Great movie! They need to release the Director's Cut on DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

When I first saw this movie in the theater, it just blew me away. Michael J. Fox was excellent as Frank, a guy who uses real ghosts to scam people into hiring his bogus paranormal investigations business to get rid of the spirits. There is a great cast and great direction by Peter Jackson. I had read that a few fews ago an extended cut of the movie was released on laserdisc with 12 minutes or so of extra footage, giving more time to the three ghosts, more time to Dahmers (the outstanding Jeffrey Combs) and making a better rounded story. The Powers-That-Be need to release this cut to DVD. DVD has been an excellent format for directors to see their movies as they originally intended. Jackson knows this. His extended cut of ``Fellowship of the Ring'' blows the theatrical cut out of the water. ``The Frighteners'' is one of those movies fans really love. As a fan, I would really love to have the extended cut of this movie released on DVD.
