Movie Reviews of The FrightenersMovie Review: Frightening Eerieness Summary: 5 Stars
Before there was "Lord of the Rings," there was "The Frighteners." Peter Jackson's under-rated supernatural black comedy. The movie stars Michael J. Fox (in his best performance since "Back to the Future") as Frank Bannister, a troubled man who can see things normal people can't see. A para-normal psychologist of sorts, Frank has just seen something new he has never seen before. After corrupting people for money by using his ghost friends, Frank stumbled upon a different problem. Numbers engraved into people's foreheads were a sign of death coming. The figure in the black cloak couldn't be stopped and it was going to get the woman Frank was falling in love with. In his past, Frank's wife had been murdered and she had a number carved into her face. Vomit time! And it was happening all over again with the supernatural world. Frank's ghoulie friends were destroyed again and a sneaky, foolish agent man was getting in Frank's way. The movie is fast and is extremely fun. You may not like the subject matter, but Michael J. Fox is great. The special effects are cool and Peter Jackson did a great job of directing. Forget the "Lord of the Rings," it's all about the reaper. "Don't fear the reaper, c'mon baby!"
Movie Review: Original, funny, and at times scary, a new take on horror Summary: 5 Stars
I was pleasently surprised by this movie when I saw it on the bigscreen, and now I'm happy to have it in my collection. Michael J Fox's role as a paranormal investigator/ghost trapper with Hired Help is just a very funny concept. Chi Mcbrie's character I thought made this movie, great comic relief. Jake Busey did a decent job at being a bad guy. I have seen this probably 8 times, and still find it funny. It holds me if I find it flipping through channels. Nice one to have in the collection. I only own the original version, worth investing into directors cut to see what has been added.
Update 9/3/2008: I now own the HD DVD directors cut version of this movie, and let me say, it toasts all previous releases of this movie. It has 14 minutes of seamlessly added footage which does not detract from the storyline, greatly enhaced soundtrack, and an incredible picture that is second to none in clarity and effects, no film specles at all. If you have HD DVD format, this disc alone makes it worth keeping, unless they can re-produce it on blu-ray. Right there with other good HD DVD movies like Beuwulf in quality of film transfer.
Movie Review: I Do Believe In Spooks! Summary: 5 Stars
Frank Bannister (Michael J. Fox) is a hearse-chasing psychic investigator, drawn into the middle of a murderous mystery when people start dropping dead prematurely all around him. Frank is the only one who has any idea what's really going on, due to his ability to see ghosts. He sees a hooded DEATH figure, stalking and crushing the hearts of unsuspecting victims. What connection is there between these new paranormal murders and the death of Bannister's own wife five years earlier? Also, what do the infamous mass-murderer Johnny Bartlett (Jake "Starship Troopers" Bucey) and his girlfriend Patricia Bradley (Dee "The Howling" Wallace-Stone) have to do with things? Enter FBI Investigator Dammers (Jeffery "Re-Animator" Combs) as a man who believes he knows what's happening, but just might be insane! Peter Jackson co-wrote, co-produced, and directed this comic / horror blow-out. The ghosts are cool and the atmosphere is just grim enough to keep the story dark. Danny Elfman's (Batman, Sleepy Hollow, Beetlejuice) score is as good as any he's ever done. THE FRIGHTENERS is a movie that deserves to be seen by any / all creep-fans...
Movie Review: Now that P.J. is 5 Stars
Well, now that Peter Jackson is a household name, maybe more people will finally see this movie. I saw a Laserdisc version (years ago) that had extra footage, and an incredible amount of extras......This is the version that should be seen, but for now this DVD will do. An underated movie that somehow got lost back in 1996...delightfully different....with that Peter Jackson twist that makes it extra special. Great storytelling, and great visuals, effects, and camerawork, along with perfect casting makes for a wild ride. More people should see this movie!! The extended version I remember seeing was way better....but impossible to find, and only on Laserdisc. We need a nice new DVD version (like the Laserdisc, with over 4 hrs. of extras, and 10-15 min. more footage in the film) , and now that Mr. Jackson is on top of the world, we might get it! I'm waiting!!!! May as well put out another version of "Forgotten Silver" too...another lost, underrated Peter Jackson film that deserves to be seen by more people.....Great storytelling!
Movie Review: A GERAT HORROR/FUNNY MOVIE Summary: 5 Stars
THIS MOVIE IS SO AWSOME. I USUALLY HATE HORROR MOVIES BUT I CAN WATCH THIS MOVIE WITHOUT BEING SCARD. I REMBER SETTING IN MY DEN WITH MY MOM AND DAD WHEN I WAS ABOUT 8 OR 9 AND SEEING THIS ONE PART IN THE MOVIE WHICH I THINK IS FUNNY: FRANK BANNESTER(FOX) IS IN THIS GRAVEYARD WITH A GHOST WHO IS AT HIS OWN FURNAL. I REMBER SEEING THE GHOST NAME:RAY LINSKY BEING BURRIED "ALIVE" WHEN HE IS DEAD IN HIS OWN GRAVE WHILE FRANK WATCHES. FINALLY FRANK GRABS HIM AND GETS HIM OUT. MY MOM CHANGED THE CHANNEL BECAUSE SHE THOUGHT I WOULD GET SCARD.SO ABOUT 3 OR 4 YEARS AFTER I SAW THAT PART I SAW THE MOVIE ON TV AND WATCHED IT AND LOVED IT MUCH. I HAD A SLEEP-OVER AND I RENTED THIS MOVIE ALL MY FRIENDS WERE AFRAIDE TO WATCH IT BUT THEY GOT INTO IT BUT ON SOME PARTS WE ALL SCREAMED. AT THE END OF THE MOVIE ALL THE GIRLS LOVED IT. NOW THEY KEEP TELLING ME IT WAS THE BEST MOVIE. AND IN THE MORNING WE ALL PUT NUMBERS ON OUR HEADS AND WENT RUNNING AROUND THE HOUSE. IF YOU ARE GOING TO HAVE A SLEEP-OVER RENT THIS MOVIE!
