Great DVD from Disney. Great quality and sharp clear picture.

Movie Review: A Surprisingly Good Sequel
Summary: 4 Stars

The Fox and the Hound 2 is a surprisingly good movie for an animated sequel! It may not be an instant Disney classic, but it's still very entertaining. One thing that made it for me is that it involves two of my favorite things; dogs and music. Quite a combination as this movie seems to hold a very musical theme; a little different from the first, but still holds well.

The story is well written. We get to see a continuation of the story of two of our favorite Disney characters Tod and Copper. In the beginning, Copper seems to be outdone by Tod in pretty much everything they do together, right down to cricket chasing. That on top of the fact that Copper is struggling in his training to become a good hunting dog makes him feel down on himself with that familiar "I can't do anything right" attitude. But, Copper soon discovers he has a talent for singing, and a twist of luck allows him to join a singing group of dogs known as the "Singing Strays." He enjoys the fame that comes with being a part of the group, but it soon threatens his friendship with Tod. In addition, the group's lead singer Dixie becomes jealous of Copper for taking away her spotlight. But, in the end, there is a well learned lesson for pretty much every character in the story. The animation is simply stunning. I was impressed with how well drawn the characters and scenes are. The animators did well with the movements and expressions of each of the dogs. The voice cast is awesome. Reba McEntire was phenomenal as the voice of Dixie, and also Patrick Swayze did well as the voice of Cash. We also get to hear the voices of some other great familiar names like Jeff Foxworthy, Jim Cummings and Rob Paulsen.

The best thing about this movie by far is the soundtrack. I was simply amazed with the songs in this film! Most sequels seem to feature a soundtrack full of poorly written forgettable songs that just can't match the catchy tunes from the previous movies. This movie's soundtrack actually manages to surpass that of the original, with awesome songs like "We're in Harmony" by the Singing Strays. Reba McEntire highlights the movie with her performance of "Good Doggie, No Bone," and also, Little Big Town performs the closing song "We Go Together," which I have NOT been able to get out of my head!

I was a bit disappointed to find that like many sequels, this movie does not have anything to do with the original storyline. It is in fact a "midquel," that takes place entirely during Tod and Copper's childhood (I guess you could call it a flashback). Given that the first movie ended on a bit of a sad note, it would have been nice to see a continuation of that story to see if grown up Tod and Copper could rekindle their friendship. Instead, we get a story that takes place somewhere in the middle of the first movie, and ends with Tod and Copper still the best of friends. A happy ending, but yet a bit sad since you know what happens to them later on.

Still, The Fox and the Hound 2 is a very entertaining and fascinating movie that the whole family will enjoy.

Movie Review: A Great Mid-quel!
Summary: 4 Stars

This is NOT a sequel to the Fox and the Hound, rather this is a story that takes place somewhere in the middle of that movie.
Tod and Copper stumble upon a country fair in their quaint country town and through a matter of circumstance, Copper ends up being a "star" of the Singin Strays singing dog group. This leads to turmoil within the band, as one of their own talented divas gets ousted in favor of the newcomer, as well as Tod becomes depressed as he gets pushed to the background as Copper rises to stardom (at the fair though, of course). This keeps enough conflict to make the movie an exciting journey, told through rich characters, beautiful bright animation, a cornucopia of great country music performed by professional stars from the heartland, memorable voice acting and a decent story to tie it all together.

It's great to see Copper and Tod back together again in their "puppy/cubhood" - something that was perhaps not fleshed out enough in the first film. Yet the real stars of the show are Cash (voiced by Patrick Swayze) and the diva dog Dixie voiced by Reba McEntire. These two have spunk and fire and its great seeing them banter back and forth in their personal and professional relationships (which naturally intertwine).

The great music, slapstick comedy and friendly characters make this a fun watch for children of all ages. I purchased it when my three year old seemed interested in it from the commercials and previews on other DVDs and it became an unlikely hit for the whole family.

Two thumbs up and four stars. One star removed because the story could have been tightened up a bit, but other than that, this is a surprisingly solid effort from Disney.

Movie Review: Fox And The Hound Go Country!
Summary: 4 Stars

The oddball relationship between Tod the Fox and Copper the Hound has stood the test of time as a favorite for kids. Twenty-five years later, the sequel was made and the decision was to pair it with the country music market. That choice has worked magic, bringing a lively soundtrack to a great romp of a tale that plays off the original characters and situations in a way that makes it feel like only days have passed instead of years.

Country music legends Reba McEntire and Jeff Foxworthy head up the cast of voice talent. They're joined by Patrick Swayze, who even joins in on some of the songs.

Although this time out the tale feels a little too familiar (two friends busted up by one friend's drive for fame), the fun that came alive in THE FOX AND THE HOUND strikes again. The chases that occur throughout the film are a delight to watch. One thing always leads to another, and chaos just builds and builds till Tod and Copper look around in shock at all they've unwittingly destroyed. The camaraderie between the two is great, and Reba and Patrick's addition to the cast is well done for the most part.

The only thing that slows the movie down somewhat is the deepening of the relationship issues between Dixie (Reba McEntire) and Cash (Patrick Swayze). That subplot comes on a little too strong and steals too much of the movie occasionally.

THE FOX AND THE HOUND 2 is definitely a keeper, one that belongs on the family DVD shelves. Sometimes sequels don't equal the originals, but this one comes close, and it provides a whole new musical sound that is heartwarming and makes you want to get up and dance. Little Big Town's "When We're Together" is pure dynamite.
