Movie Reviews of The Five Heartbeats - 15th Anniversary Special Edition (Widescreen)Movie Review: Oscars missed this one (from a white guy) Summary: 5 Stars
One of the most moving films I've ever seen, and not many professional movie critics have seen more than I have. I qualified myself "white guy" to explain this was one of the best "cross-over" black films ever made.
It should have been at the very least nominated for best film, best soundtrack, best song "A heart is a house", best director and best supporting actor for Leon. Although the core of the film was about the trials and tribulations of a black soul group (much speculation about who the inspiration band was (I believe the Dells and not the Temps or Four Tops), this movie was about love and friendship, triumphs and tragedies, struggles and perceverence. If you watch the scene from the movie where they sing "A heart is a house" A Capella and it doesn't move you to borderline tears, it's time to see a therapist. I get the same "rush" of exhileration every time I see that scene, I can hear the soundtrack in my head right now. It's one of the few times I ever cared to learn how to loop a scene on my DVD player (even though my first copy was a VHS). Watch this movie, black or white, orange or purple and ignore any critic who utters a single disparaging comment, they have no soul. The acting was brilliant from the lead roles to supporting characters to the bit players that all meshed it together to be one of my "desert island" favorites of all time. If this film was released in the last 5 years, Townsend would have been dropping Oscar trophies on his way back to his seat. Townsend, "I got nothing but love for you baby"! (See the film and you'll get this)
