Movie Reviews of The Firm: Firm Parts - 5 Day Abs & Tough Tape 2

Movie Review: Yikes! 80's flashback
Summary: 1 Stars

I would definitely NOT recomend this. Don't be fooled by the cover. The guy does an intro to each session for about 30 seconds. Then it takes you back to 1989, with big hair, bad music and really, really, bad outfits. The kind with the tights and thongs. And a lot of big hair, lots of hairspray. I had to return it. No way I could follow the exercises when I couldn't get past the the fact the woman's bangs were 8 inches tall.

Movie Review: Love, love, love these workouts
Summary: 5 Stars

I owned these workouts on VHS, and I now own this DVD. Tough Tape 2 is a compilation workout from some of the Firm's mid-to-late 1990's workouts. It has some great weight-training segments to work your upper and lower body, from Maximum Body Sculpting, Better Body and Buns, Firm Cardio, Firm Strength, and Fat Blaster. It is a lot of fun- the time FLIES by. For the most part, you're alternating lower and upper body work, so real fatigue is minimal. There is no ab work, but that's okay because you have 5-Day Abs on the DVD to add on. I won't say that it has every single body part exhausted by the end of the workout, but it is a good one to add in to your rotation- just be aware it is not the only weights workout you'll ever need in your collection. A nice thing is it's on the shorter side, time-wise- about 45 minutes- so it's easy to work it in on a busy day. And, frankly, sometimes, I just don't have the energy to do an hour or more's work. It IS harder than the Firm workouts made with the last three years or so(for those that have not been impressed with recent Firm workouts...)It may seem a bit dated by today's standards- I don't care about that, but I know it bugs some people. It is a very safe, efficient workout.

Five-Day Abs is made up of the abdominal routines of Low Impact Aerobics, Aerobic Interval Training, Time Crunch Workout, Abs, Hips, and Thighs Sculpting, and Complete Aerobic Weight-Training. It's chaptered so you can easily do a segment a day. Yeah, it's dated now. The moves are a bit repetitive. But it works. And it's relatively safe to follow- just watch your neck positioning and be sure to press your lower back to the mat(there are some people with not-so-good form demonstrating in these segments).

My DVD also included a Form Pointers segment- nothing new for intermediate to advanced exercisers, but great for a beginner to watch.

Movie Review: Buy it for 5-Day Abs, Keep it for Tough Tape 2!
Summary: 5 Stars

I bought this DVD to replace the 5-Day Abs I had on VHS. If you do the 5-day Abs every day, you will feel/see a difference in a few weeks. There are very few workout DVDs I like in which I think the ab potion is worth anything, so I typically do this as my ab workout. You don't really need the Fanny Lifter for 5-day Abs. You can use a stool, a milk crate, a small wastebasket, or something about that height on which you will rest your feet. Can you spare 6 to 9 minutes a day to do some top-notch ab work? If you have the will, this is a pretty quick, yet effective way to do abs.

Tough Tape 2 was just a bonus for me, but it has become by FAR my favorite workout tape. Yes, it's old. Yes, one of the instructors is annoying and has laughable form when the camera shows her lifting weights. She only leads one segment anyway, and you will get past her very quickly. Most of the instructors are excellent, motivational, and easy to follow. I drip buckets of sweat whenever I do this workout. I began using very light weights, and I now use the 3 to 8 pound weights recommended. A few questions answered:
1. Q. Do I really need the dowel/stick for this?
A. No, you do not have to have one. It's only used in a few segments. I did find, however, that when I began using a mop handle for balance (especially for the dips/kicks segment) when the "dowel" was used, I got a far better workout. The dips and kicks are tough to do correctly!
2. Q. Do I really need the fanny lifter for this?
A. The answer to this one is yes. I already had an aerobic step, and I did try this workout. Once I got the fanny lifter...WOW, what a difference. The first time I did the workout with the fanny lifter, I could barely walk down the stairs the next day. A step is not as tall as the fanny lifter, and the height makes a tremendous difference.
3. Q. Is this really just segments from other videos?
A. Yes. But you know what? I really like that aspect. It's not boring, and I enjoy the switching and the variety. Once you have done the workout a few times, you will become accustomed to the transitions (move your box, get your weights, etc.)

This is a challenging, fun workout. If you are more of a beginner, I suggest you start slow, do what you can, and work your way up. I know someone who started with bottles of barbecue sauce instead of weights. Work your way up. They payoff is worth it.

p.s. One of the instructors really reminds me and my sister of Kendra from "The Girls Next Door." The voice, the look (though she's not blonde and has a very different body type), and the athleticism make us speculate...could this be Kendra's aunt or something? Hmmm. You decide. Also, if you are a fan of Jen Carman from some of the current Firm videos, you get to take a look at her when she was superbuff. I prefer her look now, but it's interesting to see.

Movie Review: Don't waste your money
Summary: 1 Stars

This workout (or should I call it that) is composed of pieces of all different workouts put together. There is no class, no instructor, forget about cueing, no rhythm - it's horrible. The abs part is even worse. A kindergartener can do it. 5 day abs? Yeah right. I'm an advanced exerciser and this workout is a nightmare. Trust me - DO NOT waste your money.

Movie Review: Buy it for the 5-day Abs!
Summary: 5 Stars

OK, yes the tape is filled with obnoxious 80's music, but in all my years of exercising, it is still THE BEST abs workout I have ever done. It is hard. But it does the job. Combined with cardio, it will get your abs flat. I have owned the VHS tape for over a decade, and am now buying it on DVD, so I will never be without it.
