Movie Reviews of The Fighting LadyMovie Review: The Story of a WWII Aircraft carrier--in Color--A Must-See Summary: 5 Stars
This 62-minute color DVD is taken from a war documentary done in 1944 and meant for Home Front theater audiences. It is absolutely superb. First of all, it is directed by Oscar-winning director William Wyler, who also did the 'Memphis Belle' news documentary. Second, it is carefully put together to give viewers a feeling for what life was like on a great American aircraft carrier in the Pacific in World War II. Third, the whole thing is in exceptionally good color. The film follows the 'Fighting Lady' (not her real name, because of the war and because it represented all the carriers) from the time the first planes arrive and land on her decks through a series of hard-fought campaigns, including Kwajalein, Truk and the 'Marianas Turkey Shoot'. The footage is excellent, whether showing the daily lives of men on the ship, from the captain to the pilots to the cooks and dishwashers, or showing actual combat footage taken from the gun cameras of American fighters and fighter-bombers. The action footage is amazingly good. Narration is provided by Robert Taylor, an actor who was a Naval Reservist during the war. It is first-class in every way. I recommend it for anyone interested in life on aircraft carriers in World War II, in good color combat footage, in watching planes take off and land on a narrow, pitching deck, or WWII naval history in general. This is a bargain at twice the price.
Movie Review: Time Machine Summary: 5 Stars
It's a truly wonderful trip into the time when the destiny of the world was being decided. These are some of the young men who fought for our right to live free. These are the men of "the greatest generation" as young men just then becoming great. This is the real thing - 16mm movie film clips taken on the spot. It's not a recreation or imagined story or modern movie about what happened then. It is the actual men, the actual machines and the actual happenings - as it happened while it was happening. And, although the color is faded and sometimes not true, although the narration may seem a little hokey or biased and, although if it was made with a consumer video camera today it would be technically a lot better - this movie IS 1943 and so is everything about it. Strap into the time machine and go aboard the carrier for a little while and see what these heroes were doing - as they were doing it. It's a wonderful experience.
Movie Review: A Movie I Saw on the Screen four times in the !940s Summary: 5 Stars
If you want to see what it is like on an aircraft carrier during WWII this is one to see. I paid ten cents per visit to see this movie, four times one summer, in the local theater shortly after it was released. I was really impressed. The DVD should be as good as the "real mccoy" when it was shown in a theater. I still get tense when watching the action. I was an aviator and feel the emotion and situations shown.
Movie Review: Amazing for those who like WWII documentaries. Summary: 5 Stars
I ordered this because my grandfather served aboard the USS Yorktown (The fighting lady). He never talked about his ordeal. The movie does not glorify war. It shows you the horror and the bravery. It will instill in you a profound sense of pride and appreciation for those that fought for our freedom. God Bless them all.
Movie Review: WWII movie Summary: 5 Stars
I know this was a movie to stimulate patriotism in Anmerica when it was needed but I find nothing wrong with that. It seems to be a current fad to belittle patriotism as the bully attitude and that is sad. This is a feel good movie about heroism and a great ship.
