Movie Reviews of The Far PavilionsMovie Review: The Far Pavillion movie direction Summary: 2 Stars
I was quite bored throughout the movie. Amy Irving looks sickly and she has been made to look very ugly. The Kings and Princess' in those times in India enjoyed good clothes and good living. The dresses worn even by the royals are shown to be very cheap. The royal processions shown are shown to be worse than the poor tribals. The movie would be better to watch if it was directed by someone who understood Old Indian royal life. Overall a poor depiction of royal life in India.
Movie Review: Bad video transfer Summary: 2 Stars
The video transfer on this was bad. Scenes in broad daylight were so badly damaged you couldn't see them on the screen. There were no extras on the DVD. This is a classic example of a studio trying to pull in $$$ on a cheap re-issue.
Movie Review: Spectacular scenery and little else Summary: 1 Stars
When buying on the Internet and relying heavily on reviews, there's always a chance of getting duped into buying a real turkey from time to time. Alas, this is what happened to me with The Far Pavilions. The DVD cover describes it as a "haunting love story set in the India of the British Raj against the spectacular and epic sweep of battle, treachery and intrigue." It is in fact complete dross, unless of course you're a fan of Mills & Boon or Barbara Cartland. The baffling thing is that they went to the trouble of making it in the first place. The cost must have been phenomenal. The cast is ostensibly very strong (it includes John Gielgud, Omar Sharif, Christopher Lee and a host of other big names) and it's all shot on location (and the scenery IS sumptious), but the storyline is just awful. Some of the lines spoken were simply embarrassing. I watched all 303 minutes (303 wasted minutes). The script was unerringly dreadful throughout. To compound it, the two lead stars, Ben Cross and Amy Irving, were hopelessly miscast. It's a shame to see such fine actors so out of place. The best things one can say about this are that the scenery is wonderful and that it doesn't run to a 304th minute. If you like India, a good story and top-notch production standards, try watching "The Jewel in the Crown" - a truly excellent TV series.
Movie Review: A classic novel made dull and boring.Stay FAR away! Summary: 1 Stars
If you have this debacle on vhs, keep it! The dvd is not worth anything better. It is the same print and the same misdirected, terribly acted mess. Amy Irving and Ben Cross could not have acted any flatter. The story plods hopelessly through all 300+ minutes. There is no relief for a thirst for a better film.Stick with A PASSAGE TO INDIA, HEAT AND DUST,GANDHI, WATER,FIRE and EARTH.
Movie Review: It butchers a classic! Summary: 1 Stars
This movie was hardly based on the wonderful book written by M.M. Kaye. It completely butchered it! It was a horrible movie, with a bad cast who acted even worse! Save yourself 180 mins. of torture, and do not but this movie!
