Movie Reviews of The FantasticksMovie Review: Wonderfully 4 Stars
I had never seen the play before seeing this movie. But, I was curious about the story line and I'm a long-time musical movie lover! Now, this movie isn't "Sound of Music" or "Fiddler on the roof" so if you're exspecting that, don't watch it. This movie is completely different and more up-to-date in the sense of story-line. The romantic, almost Romeo and Juliet story, is wonderful and the songs are very enjoyable. I thought for a first time actor on the screen, former New Kid Joe McIntyre showed that not only can he sing but he can act with the best of them too! Why this movie never made it to the actual big screen (and it took 5 years to come out!) is beyond me. I think it would of done well and I can't wait to own my own copy! Give the movie at least a chance. I don't think many will be disappointed!!!!!!
Movie Review: A refreshing take on an old classic! Summary: 4 Stars
Instead of simply filming the stage show, the movie makes use of cinematic techniques... and used people who can really sing and act to fill the few roles. Joel Grey still sings, dances, and acts circles around the rest of the cast, but the former New Kid on the Block manages to add a bit of naivete and humor to the role of the son. The rest of the cast is quite good as well. The special effects, while not required, add rather than detract from the story. The rest of the technical stuff is good, too. It's a good example of the new generation of the Hollywood musical: think this season's Chicago, and if you must, Moulin Rouge. The only thing I dislike is the pacing: if this was live in the theatre, the audience would be rustling their programs before the cardboard moon even appears.
Movie Review: A cottom candy romance of a musical Summary: 4 Stars
This film seems to have never found an audience.
I think it may have been the casting of Jean Louisa Kelly
in the lead role. Although she is beautiful and talented,
that is an acquired taste by those who know her work.
The almost too slick stagging would have learned something from
the musical "Oklahoma" in depicting the Midwestern American community.
The carnival never has an carnival "feel" to it
that it should have had like in "State Fair".
In this case failure may not have been a learning experience?
Movie Review: Delightful Summary: 4 Stars
Although I have never seen an on-stage production of the Fantasticks, I was delighted to have the opportunity to see a short lived run here in Boston movie theaters. I found the simplicity of the plot and set delightful. It was a nice release from the overly done special graphics movies of today, with a very simple plot -- two young lovers deciding to be or not to be together. The singing was beautiful and the involvement of the entire cast in practically every scene makes it a riot to watch.
Movie Review: Not the play, but good Summary: 4 Stars
Although the movie has a different feel than the play...and trys to drag more realism into this story than there should really be, its still totally worthwhile. The overall story of the play is timeless and the movie captures it beautifully. Also the songs are so amazing and i love Joey from new kids as Matt, the boy!! If you love this play i'd recomned seeing this movie- just dont expect a carbon copy of the stage show and u wont be dissapointed.
