Movie Reviews of The FantasticksMovie Review: Love it Love it! Summary: 5 Stars
I've had this movie for a year, and have often found myself watching it over and over on end. It has often annoyed my parents because I hardly let them watch tv during the day because I was too into the movie (so what if it's my hundredth time seeing it!?) I fell so in love with the music I was hoping to find a soundtrack for it, but all I could find was the soundtrack to the original play. I decided to download some songs from that soundtrack to see if it was worth buying. Being a teen of a new generation (and having heard the music from the 1995 movie first) I didn't like the sound of the original music as much as the newer. :\ I'm hoping they will make a soundtrack for the movie soon so that I can go to sleep at night listening to this amazing musical. Anyway, I'm really excited because a movie theater here where I live is showing the movie tonight and I got tickets! I'm so excited to be able to go see my new favorite musical on the big screen! Woo-hoo!
Movie Review: Beguiling Summary: 5 Stars
That MGM/UA chose to ignore this treasure still astounds me. I saw it in Los Angeles twice and could not wait to buy the DVD. I only wish a CD was available. Oddly, I was never a huge fan of the play, and never would have dreamed it possible that it could be translated to film. The slight story and broad theatrics have been adapted with amazing subtlety and simplicity combined with breathtakingly gorgeous orchestrations by the great Johnathan Tunick, who has done a lot of great work for Sondheim. The cast succeeds beyond all expectations; especially successful are Jean Louisa Kelly and Joe McIntyre, who play off one another charmingly.I was puzzled by some of the stinging reviews this film got when it was finally released. I suspect those same people dislike The Sound of Music, Oklahoma! and the musical form in general. Bottom line, if you enjoy musicals, chances are you will find much to enjoy in this.
Movie Review: Long live DVD Summary: 5 Stars
I rented the Fantasticks on DVD a couple of weeks ago. I was hoping for a big intro to the DVD at the beginning. There wasn't one but who cares. Sadly, I wasn't able to see the Fantasticks before it closed yesterday. This is the closest as I'll get to it even though it was shortened to 87 minutes. The extra scenes are amazing. They should have had those three scenes with the police chief. Jonathan Morris was amazing as El Gallo. He sang Try to Remember very peacefully and not like Jerry Orbach's belting it out. Mr. Morris made it even more beautiful and my mother fell in love with the song. They should have kept the scenes where Teller has dialogue. I am dying to get this DVD along with the book of the musical and the CD.
Movie Review: Butchered but still magical Summary: 5 Stars
Director's cut -- please??? A gorgeous film adaptation of the stage musical is severely edited but still retains incredible visuals and great performances. But what was MGM thinking? Why not give us the Director's Cut (which would have been at least thirty minutes longer) and retain the show's creators' vision? Doesn't make sense. The deleted scenes are priceless, and we thank the good folks at MGM for including those, but would you please release the collector's edition now?
Movie Review: Thank God Summary: 5 Stars
Having never seen The Fantasticks on stage, it was impossible to predict how it would turn out. The result was phenomenal. As a lover of old movie musicals, I can safely say this brings all of those glorious aspects to life. Comedy, beautiful songs, poignant moments, it's all here folks. A sweet, gorgeously photographed film, ignore the musical haters in the family and see it. It's worth it.
