Irish novelist, short story writer, and poet, James Joyce is regarded as one of the greatest literary talents of the 20th century and is known for his revolutionary innovations in the art of the novel. He implements the use of complex allusions, interior monologue, and use of puns and invented words. Before other writers had imitated and explained his techniques, his books were denounced as obscure, unintelligible, nonsensical and obscene.

Joyce was raised in an atmosphere that would seem least conducive to literary greatness. Being of ten children, his youth was marked by poverty and a struggle for middle-class respectability. He did have an excellent education at a succession of Jesuit schools. Some of his famous works include: Ulysses, Finnegans Wake, and his autobiographical A Portrait of the Artist as a Young Man.
