Movie Reviews of The FBI Story

Movie Review: Entertaining, if overlong Docu-Drama on the F.B.I.
Summary: 4 Stars

Hollywood fluff about lifetime agent Stewart recalling his past experiences in the Federal Burough of Investigation from the 1920s through the late fifties.
The film could have been rather episodic but is held together by the interesting family life of Stewart's G-Man and his wife, Vera Miles.

Highlights include Stewart taking on practically all of the 1930s gangsters including John Dillinger, Pretty Boy Floyd, Ma Barker, Baby Face Nelson(who incidently guns down Stewart's Best Friend) and George "Machine Gun" Kelly. These scenes have a wonderful sense for time and are not as sugar coated as expected.

Stewart's stay on a "modern day"(circa. 1920s) Indian reservation is pretty entertaining as well, but the Communist hunt in the last half hour are woefully dated and boring as opposed to previous escapades.

It must be a tribute to Stewart's excellence as an actor to bring his role so front and center. At one point in the story, as the country enters World War 2, and predictably Stewart's son enlists in the Marines. It's telegraphed far ahead what his fate will be, but Stewart makes the predictable outcome tragic and heartbreaking and holds this film together.

Not the best film on the genre, but fans of the actor and Crime films could do worse than not give this a glance.

DVD is curiously bare bones, save for a Trailer. Tis a shame. Would have enjoyed some commentary for background information on this interesting film.

Summary of The FBI Story

American movie icon James Stewart portrays one of J. Edgar Hoover's finest and Vera Miles co-stars as his steadfast wife in this salute to the Federal Bureau of Investigation. The colorful career of Agent Chip Hardesty (Stewart) covers 1924 to the late '50s. Along the way he tangles with everything from the Ku Klux Klan to a bomber who commits mass murder for insurance money. His fiercest exploits come in the '30s when he stares down a gun barrel at Baby Face Nelson, Pretty Boy Floyd, Machine Gun Kelly, Ma Barker and John Dillinger. From two-time Pulitzer Prize winner Don Whitehead's bestseller and directed by veteran Hollywood hitmaker Mervyn LeRoy, The FBI Story is your rat-a-tat ticket to the inside story.
Approved by J. Edgar Hoover himself, this idealized telling of the FBI's origins spans the years between Hoover's appointment in the '20s and the Red Scare of the mid-'50s. Beginning with an investigation that showcases the talent and resources available to the FBI, dedicated agent Chip Hardesty (Jimmy Stewart) tells new recruits how the agency was streamlined into a professional crime-fighting organization. Using his personal life story as a backdrop, Hardesty takes the new men (and the viewer) through cases involving gangsters, land grabs, and Communist spies. Vera Miles plays Hardesty's dedicated wife, while Murray Hamilton helps out as gung-ho fellow agent Sam Crandall. Lots of pro-Hoover PR and propaganda, but it never gets in the way of the action or family drama. Interestingly, the history of the Hardesty family is almost as good as the history of the agency. --Mark Savary
