Movie Reviews of The Emerald ForestMovie Review: "Do you know my people?" Summary: 3 Stars
John Boorman's "The Emerald Forest" marks the director's return to nature a decade after "Deliverance" (1972). Once again, Boorman so ably captures the essence of the outdoors that it almost becomes a tangible supporting character. Nature in the cinematic world of Boorman is an entity to be revered and feared if you know what is good for you. Bill Markham (Powers Boothe) is an American engineer who is in Brazil to help oversee the construction of a dam. While inspecting the construction site, tragedy strikes when his young son, Tommy (William Rodriguez) disappears. Haunted by his loss, Markham returns to the rainforest every year for ten years in search of his lost son. He eventually finds the adult Tommy (Charley Boorman) - now know as Tomme - living with the native "Invisible People." As Markham tries to re-establish his relationship with his son, he slowly learns of the devastating ecological and cultural consequences his industrial world has had upon the area. "The Emerald Forest" sometimes comes across as too heavy-handed in its critique of modern society's threat towards the natural world. Yet, despite its labored message, the film's central story of Markham's searching for his son is involving on an emotional and dramatic level. Furthermore, the scenes with the natives are an insightful venture into an unfamiliar way of life that is as compelling as it is informative. Chalk up "The Emerald Forest" as another little nugget from the Eighties.
Movie Review: One of my favorite movies, BUT.... Summary: 3 Stars
Just watched this DVD again last night. Emerald Forest and Dances with Wolves are two of my all-time favorite movies... because perhaps both movies show humans as they were meant to live (hunt, eat, sleep, have sex, that's about it).
No point in re-reviewing the film here, others have already done an excellent job. My review is of the DVD itself.
One of my pet peeves is DVD covers that claim Dolby Digital sound when in fact the best you get is Dolby Pro Logic. This is one of those instances. Do not be fooled by the Dolby Digital claim. This DVD is NOT encoded as such.
Video quality is so-so at best.
What happened to the subtitles? There is some dialogue where subtitles are missing. There are misspelled words (another silly pet peeve of mine).
The DVD is still worth a buy because it's cheap and I wore the VHS out. This movie is in desperate need of a deluxe edition. It features a wonderous, haunting soundtrack that deserves first-class audio treatment. Unfortunately, the movie wasn't a big hit so I'll be surprised if we ever see one.
Movie Review: an interesting movie Summary: 3 Stars
i really like this movie for it's visual style. the colors of the forest are bold, as are all the people's faces, and there is an intensity to all that color. the story is supposed to be based on a true story, which adds to the drama of seeing it unfold..you can't help wonder what you would do. i saw this movie at around 12 yrs old, and i loved it because it was so unusual, and because you really care about all the people involved in the story....it grabs you and you want to know what happens to the end. i highly reccomend it to anyone, although no boys under 17-18 should see it because it has a million beautiful, bare breasted tribeswomen in it!! haha.
Movie Review: subtitles? Summary: 3 Stars
I originally saw this on VHS and later purchased it on DVD because I love the story. The DVD ad said it had subtitles, which is important since about half of the movie is in a South American language. What a disappointment when I got my DVD and the subtitles were in French, German...but not English! What a rip-off!!
five stars for the movie, one star for subtitle misinformation.
Movie Review: Pass... Summary: 1 Stars
I'm not a harsh movie critic at all. And I love movies from the 80s and early 90s (Medicine Man, Point of no return, Labyrinth) I tend to like a lot of different movies that others don't. But after 45 minutes of watching this one, I had to turn it off. I was bored and thought that watching something else that I know I will like and have seen before would be a better idea. The acting was ridiculous. The cinemetography was mediocre. The main star of the film was the location - not the characters. That's the only enticing aspect of it. There's no legacy or classiness in this film where there should be as the story is compelling, yet its execution was poor. I would love to see this movie re-done, with better quality cast and a waaaaaaaaay better script (some of the actions of the indigenous peoples were completely confusing and not easily understood to their relevance to the story). I wouldn't recommend this film to anyone.
