Movie Review: Good Old-Fashioned Movie Entertainment
Summary: 5 Stars
I loved this film for many reasons. It is fun to watch...entertaining from start to end. It has two of the era's best film stars: Robert Redford and Jane Fonda. Both actors are a remarkable combination of good looks, likable personalities and genuine talent. Likewise, Sydney Pollack makes a film that is both meaningful and entertaining. It lacks the dreariness and pretentiousness that have become so fahionable in the last few decades. (Coen Bros, Quentin Tarantino, to name just a few)
It is a well rounded story which shows character development, has a beginning, middle and satisfying conclusion. You feel great at the end, without it being overly mushy or unrealistic.
Redford, as the cowboy, embodies one of our favorite American archetypes: the freedom-loving, iconoclastic, uneducated, hero with a big heart. It doesn't hurt that he is amazingly good-looking. Fonda is lovely, too, as the East coast, driven, brittle, reporter who puts success at her job first in her life until she encounters the Cowboy! Their relationship is told just right, there is antagonism between them for most of the film and there is just the right amount of romance near the end to make it worthwhile.
The addition of the always wonderful Willie Nelson, and his music make it even better.
If you're not afraid of being a Middle-Brow, let yourself enjoy this one!
