Movie Reviews of The Duellists

Movie Review: Talk About Stalking!!!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is an extremely entertaining film. Very, very unusual but it grabs you. It is definitely about a stalker and the initial offense that creates the circumstance for the ongoing harassment for a period of 20 years is unbelievably obscure. I purchased this in VHS years ago when it was first released and I can't even fathom a guess at the number of times I have watched it. If you are a person who loves movies, all kinds of movies, you should definitely see this even if you do not purchase it. It is amazing how off-the-wall the "reasoning"?? is behind this ongoing assault. I think it's a winner.....

Movie Review: The First Film of a Master
Summary: 5 Stars

This is Ridley Scott's first film as a director. Before this he was a set designer. As you can imagine all the settings in the film are so beautiful they seem fictionally fantastic at times. Harvey Keitel does and excellent job. This movie completely changed my view of him in his later movies. Keith Carradine does a one hit wonder performance.

As a fencer I can honestly say that the movie does very well. The actors use a good majority of the stances and fighting styles that would be used at the time.

It should also be mentioned that the book is also a great written by conrad.

Movie Review: i love this film
Summary: 5 Stars

it's got Napoleonic hussars, duels, and plenty of Harvey Kietel's NY accent jousting with Carradine's midwestern relaxing tones.
Very silly for a couple of 19th century frenchmen.

Just the same the story is brilliant (apparently about a real pair of Hussars who dueled for over 30 years!) - it has the feel of a Kurosawa epic, but is much tighter. I'm sorry they shied away from the actual sword action so much - they were worried that it would be boring! It never is with Toshiro Mifune!

PLUS the director's commentary is pretty interesting as well.

Movie Review: Ridley Scott's first is a masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

"The Duelists" is often overshadowed by "Alien" and "Blade Runner", but it is arguably Ridley Scott's finest film. Every single frame is like a painting - the camera soaking up every lavish period detail of this tense drama (adapted from a Joseph Conrad novel) about two Nepoleonic soldiers whose conflict with each other causes them clash in duels several times over many years. The pacing is elegant, the acting understated and the cinematography is nothing short of breathtaking. "The Duelists" is a stunning film and a timeless classic.

Movie Review: Fantastic
Summary: 5 Stars

This was Ridly Scott's first movie and you can see the camera work that later became famous in Blade Runner and Alien.

This is based on a true story. In fact the 2 volume history of dueling by Steinmetz devotes and entire chapter to these two men.

I think the costuming in this movie is very faithful to the time period. Even their hair styles change with the times.

I also love the cinematography...there are so many scenes that could be the cover of a magazine...it is gorgeous...it is easy to get lost in...

A must have movie
