Movie Reviews of The Door in the Floor

Movie Review: Jeff Bridges' career performance
Summary: 5 Stars

This film would be a bit depressing and slow for my taste if not for the unbelievably complex and comic performance delivered by Jeff Brigdes. His performance alone makes this film worth 5 stars.

While some of the story is serious and sad, a decent portion (particularly a chase sequence near the end) is laugh-out-loud funny. You could almost call this a dark comedy rather than a domestic drama. Either way, the character of Ted Cole - complex and flawed (but still very likable) - is a showcase for Jeff Bridges' talent. Not to be missed.

Movie Review: The Door in the Floor
Summary: 5 Stars

This sad and funny film, adapted from John Irving's novel, is most notable for Bridges' Oscar-worthy turn as Ted, who conveys egotism and wisdom, regret and vulnerability, all without us hearing the gears shift. Ted is an aging poster boy for the pitfalls of brilliance and success, exacerbated by a permanent sadness that isolates him and slowly eats away his insides. "The Door in the Floor" is a perceptive and engaging drama about two people dealing with the consequences of inconsolable grief.

Movie Review: Different but Good
Summary: 5 Stars

If you are shocked by sudden unexpected scenes of sexual nature, you may find some parts offensive. This film says a lot about loneliness, desire, love and loss. The acting is marvelous. An egocentric novelist played by Jeff Bridges is the central character. His "strangeness" reflects on everyone else and makes for a cast of characters who are not quite psychologically upright. We feel for the characters as they try to right their wounded lives.

Movie Review: Love It!
Summary: 5 Stars

This is my favorite movie of all time and I do not care what anyone else says. It is great! It's very witty and entertaining, yet deep. There are little things I didn't pick up on the first time or two watching it and I have seen it TONS of times now and I love it. I'm also a fan of last scenes and I love the last scene in this one. Literally...the door in the floor. I don't get it, but I love it. Beautiful, beautiful movie!

Movie Review: Amazingly subtle and moving
Summary: 5 Stars

I hope you have the same type of experience I did with this movie. It's somewhat outrageous yet subtle in it's representation of soul-wrenching sadness. The characters are extremely flawed, making our reactions and responses real and complicated. It's one of those great films where I sat in mild shock at the end, but with a thinly veiled admixture of emotions. If you liked "The Ice Storm" check this one out.
