Movie Reviews of The Door in the Floor

Movie Review: A complete surprise
Summary: 5 Stars

I rented A Door In The Floor expecting nothing and wound up so enthralled that when I discovered the DVD had a scratch on it and I had to return it to Blockbuster for another copy, I found me holding myself from yelling at the cashier about how good it was and how the scratch nearly ruined the whole thing. It's a symptom of a slow, delicately told, and wholly enrapturing story of the things that keep a set of devastated parents going after tragedy. Jeff Bridges gives one of the most haunting performances of his career here, with magnificent strength and charisma, while Kim Basinger mourns so well, she finally exhibits work strong enough to merit her Oscar-winning turn in L.A. Confidential. What struck me most, though, was the wistful visuals and sand-blown direction by Tod Williams, who lets the images of these characters linger with the grace of, well, a director you've heard of. The moment in which Basinger and Bridges, silently, say goodbye to each other, with a protracted glance, is positively gutwrenching drama.

Movie Review: Intelligent & Poignant look at Bereavement / Loss
Summary: 5 Stars

First of all, I don't know if those with puritanical inclinations would like this movie. It is rated R for a reason. I, personally, feel like this material is necessary though, because it adds depth to the characters. It didn't offend me, but I am not easily offended either.
Basically, if you have an open mind...this is a gem of a movie. For one thing..it is unique...with no movie like it. This is nice because so many movies are just recreations of something already done...only spun a little differently. This movie, on the other hand, is totally new and totally refreshing.
I don't want to give away any spoilers, so I won't go into the story line or plot. However, the title "The door in the floor" is very symbolic, and after seeing the movie you will know why. The movie is a bit sad...I was close to tears towards the end. It's a deep movie, and one of the best movies I have seen in a long time.

Movie Review: Explores the raw pain of marital dysfunction
Summary: 5 Stars

I remember how searing and raw this film was when I first watched it. Kim Basinger and Jeff Bridges do a remarkable job of showing how a happily married couple can fall prey to blame, guilt, shame, drinking, infidelity and more after a tragedy befalls them. Having another child does not make the situation better, either. Everyone suffers in the end. Still, it has bits of humor and unpredictability that make you want to keep watching. Little Elle Fanning, who turned five during the filming, possesses a lot of gravity and sadness for one so young. She is never annoying the way most child actors are. Also watch for Mimi Rogers as the woman Bridges has an affair with, at least for a while. Bridges also provided the haunting drawings used as part of the storyline.

Movie Review: A rare gem!
Summary: 5 Stars

A brilliant character study film, if told in precise words. 'Door in the floor' has lot to offer to the viewer than just exquisite scenarios and sex. Jeff Bridges is absolutely brilliant, I hardly get words to describe him in the film, his appearance throughout the film is full of flamboyancy, he simply shines with excellence. A decent performence from the rest of the cast and above all, a lovely performence from the cute little star, Elle Fanning.
The film successfully captures every human emotion, mood, plight in the film, the characters portrayed are very down to earth, genuine, they could be just probably living next door to you. A gem of a film.

Movie Review: Beautiful Movie....
Summary: 5 Stars

I had never heard of this movie until recently. I seen it at the local movie rental and seen that Ebert gave it a recommendation. I'm so glad I rented it. It was a beautiful movie, that really makes you feel human. I know that sounds funny, but it does. In a world of so much superficiality, it makes you feel human. Your flaws are no bigger than any one elses. We all take different paths in life and we all make our own mistakes. Jeff Bridges gave a wonderful performance. I also thought Fanning was good, much better than her sister. Two big thumbs up!
