Movie Reviews of The Devil's Own

Movie Review: I am Oirish and I thought it was quite good....
Summary: 4 Stars

OK, so I'll admit that Brad Pitt's accent is not perfect and there's no way any IRA man would be that pretty (imagine if Brad Pitt looked like Gerry Adams - I doubt he would get as many roles). But the accent is actually not that bad, and Belfast people do actually say "foks sake" quite frequently.

I agree there are some dubious moments in the plot and that the action scenes are a little far fetched, but hey, this is Hollywood, and there is enough of a "gritty realism" feel imparted elsewhere to distract the viewer from these minor inconsistencies.

Harrison Ford plays the same character he played in Patriot Games / Air Force 1 / The Fugitive, which is fine by me since I enjoyed all those movies and I am a big Harrison fan.

I didn't find the plot partucularly confusing (it's pretty straightforward really). And although I certainly wouldn't venture to say that the script delivers chapter and verse on the hellishly complicated political situation in N. Ireland, it does at least go some way to explaining the mechanisms (personal revenge, indoctrination) that drive the cycle of violence there.

And the bittersweet ending has the desired effect.

Movie Review: A deeply moving film about a crucial issue of our times
Summary: 4 Stars

Devil's Own has been badly under rated by most reviewers. The film treats a tragic and ongoing political issue which has deep historical roots. Brad Pitt gives a passionate, convincing and moving portrayal of a young IRA activist. The viewer can understand where he is coming from (to use an Americanism) and empathises with him. Harrison Ford's character also brings across the dilemma he faces as his affection for the Pitt character conflicts with his perceived duty. The film was certainly a contribution to the understanding of the North Irish problem. I also enjoyed it tremedously as a political as well as a personal dilemma film. Perhaps the Harrison Ford character should have been less 'soft' in his policing scenes.

Movie Review: Europe vs USA
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a typical action fim, well made is this sense. But contains some more at bottom. That's the contrast the IRA terrorist played by Brad Pitt says two times to the policeman incarnated by Harrison Ford: "This isn't a happy American History, but a bitter Irish history".
In effect, it's said in Spain that "We have the most sad history, because ever ends badly". Today this seems to accomplish another time.
I don't know what happened in European Prehistory, but truly , the History of the whole Europe is tragic and has few happy endings. Ireland isn't a exception, of course.

Movie Review: The Devil's Own
Summary: 4 Stars

I don't like to tell the story of the movie. I feel that it is something for you to see. This movie touched my feelings on the plight of a situtation that has been going on for years with no end in sight. In the fight that is still raging today in another country brings and individual who thinks he can make a difference into our own country to purchase items they believe will help them and the extremes that a person will go through to help his country and cause to win the war they have been fighting all their lives for.

Movie Review: Underrated
Summary: 4 Stars

The main complaint about this movie is that the depiction of Irish terrorism is unrealistic. So what, that's not even what the movie is really about. The movie is about what you would do if you figured out that someone you had accepted into your home had been lying to you all along and had even put your family in danger. This concept creates an entertaining film and makes up for the few unrealistic scenes in the beginnning.
