Movie Reviews of The Devil's Own

Movie Review: One Of Both Ford's & Pitt's Best Films
Summary: 5 Stars

Harrison Ford has done a done a considerable amount of movies I have really enjoyed and this is one of my favorites. It has a great story, good acting, nice photography and a pleasing soundtrack. It also has an excellent mixture of violence and lulls, not overdoing either and some excellent suspense. All of that adds up to a good two hours of entertainment.

Pitt also excels in here as the IRA terrorist who is extremely bitter, violently so, since as a young boy he witnessed his father's murder. It has to be one of Pitt's best performances.. Ford plays a New York City cop and an honest, good one at that, which is nice to see in a modern-day film in which filmmakers prefer to show corrupt policemen. Another very strong point of this film was the ending. When you read someone writing it was "unsatisfactory," don't believe it. Morally, the only objection I had to this film - other than the Lord's name in vain - was too much credence given to Pitt's revenge and violent lifestyle being "understandable" under the circumstances. No, sorry, but as sweet as revenge is to all of us, it shouldn't be condoned.

I love the Irish music in here, especially the final song sung during the ending credits. It's beautiful, so don't just the film off too soon.

Movie Review: Wonderful, horrible, tragic. It's an Irish story.
Summary: 5 Stars

Probably the most balanced portrayal of terrorism in Northern Ireland. And before anyone goes all sectarian, don't forget that Nelson Mandela was branded a terrorist by the government of his country right up until they made him President.

Brad Pitt gets his teeth into a real part here, and proves that he really can act. Harrison Ford blends superbly into a supporting role, as he plays the cop who unwittingly gives an active terrorist a home.

I cannot condone acts of terrorism (even if calling them such is largely a matter of perspective) but this film gives you a real sympathy for Pitt's IRA man. You know where he's coming from, why he does what he does. It may be wrong, and killing to achieve a political objective must be morally wrong, but you cannot condemn him for it.

There are no easy answers proposed here, no moral cop outs. It's a hard film, and an uncomfortable one. Pitt's character is neither glorified for being IRA nor comdemned for it. As he says as the! end of the film, it's an Irish story. It may not have a happy ending, but at least the killing in the film eventually comes to an end.

And who knows, maybe Gerry Adams will be President one day. Stranger things have happened. END

Movie Review: I really liked it when I watched it second time
Summary: 5 Stars

I watched this movie twice. First time right after it was released - did not like it. The commercial was disorienting. I thought Ford was running too much for no reason, etc. Then, I watched it again on DVD recently and now I really liked it. I disagree with those who believes that this movie romanticizes, well, IRA, etc. I think it is very tragic to be in the position of the character played by Pitt and the movie show it very well from the first minute (at least to me, after watching it second time). And this is a very emotional movie if you (are able to) catch this mood. Pitt truly shines there - ``madly photogenic performance'' as some say. The movie reminds me ``Perfect storm'' - in some sense - I refer to the look in Clooney's eyes while he is under water in one of the final scenes- just the same mood for the entire movie.

Movie Review: brad pitt is a great actor
Summary: 5 Stars

This film shows how we, no matter how hard we try not to, have to recognize that life on any term is complex, illogical, and incredibly vulnerable to human pain. Harrison Ford proved a long time ago that he can act. In this film, Brad Pitt demonstrates that his soul knows and understands completely the depths of human suffering. This film does not condone violence, but it recognizes the horrible consequences of the human need to react to violence with violence. This is a great film!

Movie Review: The Devil's Own
Summary: 5 Stars

The movie rates with one of my favorites... dim the lights, lean back and enjoy this well made film. The soundtrack, the acting, and the story line mesh together to make a true believable story that is an enjoyable and emotional experience. And to those who commented that it certain things didnt make sense...you didnt pay attention.
