Movie Reviews of The Devil's Arithmetic

Movie Review: A Really Touching Film
Summary: 4 Stars

When I found out the book The Devils Arithmatic was a movie I practiaclly went hysterical! When I finally bought the movie on DVD and watched it, I was a little disappointed. It didn't really stick to the book and I have to admit the acting was a little cheesy, and it seemed to me kinda hard to understand if you hadn't read the book... but overall I was really pleased with this book.

I would recommend the book to anyone who saw this movie... it's definatly better (as the books usually are). The ending was very sad but deeply moving, it almost made me cry (I'm not big a movie cryer person). This movie was just very sad, though I think they were too soft with creating a relization of the Holocaust. Brittany Murphy, playing as Hannah's cousin Rivkah, was fantastic and thought-prevoking. Definatly the #1 acting in this movie.

Overall I have to say this movie was excellent and I would recommend to all. It's really a good movie if you like historical fiction.

Movie Review: Good movie about the Holocaust
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a good movie and I'm twenty years old. It's a dark story about a young girl who, getting bored out of her mind with her relatives stories, decides to take a trip through time to discover her true self. The darker elements effect that of a "girl, interrupted," and take us back to brittany murphy's character. She explains the past through her eyes. the two girls quickly become friends, and survive the bleakness of loss. they both get tortured at the camps, and make do with what they have. It's a good historical film about friendship between these two young women and I just find that so touching, and if all, the writer is trying to get that across the most. I think Kirsten's character returns with a whole new respect on culture and life in general and most above all life. This was a good movie. Brittany also does an amazing job.

Movie Review: Food for thought for a spoiled girl
Summary: 4 Stars

The Devil's Arithmetic is a very good moral tale. It is a pretty interesting time travel tale and a pretty stark view at the evil of the Nazi regime.

Is the film perfect? Not quite. Some of the acting and especially the accents are a bit stretched . It maybe was a bit "after noon special" (in fact it is a "SHOWTIME" special) in playing down the violence. And truly, that mught be a good thing because it is tame enough to show to fairly young "tweener" kids to watch, and truth be told, it was for my youngest that I got this DVD, as she is fascinated with civil rights and the halocaust, and often wants to see films that are a lot less tame than this.

So did I like it? Yes I did. It is a great story about family, about faith, about right and wrong, and about making better choices.

Movie Review: Not bad, but disappointing after the book.
Summary: 4 Stars

I purchased this movie to go along with my sixth-grade Holocaust unit, in which we read the Jane Yolen novel on which the movie is based. The changes were a disappointment to both me and my students. In fact, of my 60 students, 59 wrote they were disappointed with the movie version after reading the book (they enjoyed the book a great deal). While the movie is not poor, it doesn't measure up to the book, but that seems to be the norm. It provided a great assignment of comparison/contrast, as mentioned by J. Potter "Teacher with a Mission".

Movie Review: Accompaniment to Anne Frank
Summary: 4 Stars

My teaching colleague and I showed this to eighth graders as an accompaniment to an Anne Frank unit. The students were clearly moved by it. We have now made this a standard part of our curriculum. We feel it encourages students to seek further information about the Holocaust, meeting the goal of any teaching opportunity. While it touches on the horrors our fellow human beings faced, it still respects the sensitive nature of some our less mature students. I highly endorse this movie.
