Movie Reviews of The Deer Hunter

Movie Review: They don't make them like this anymore
Summary: 5 Stars

The only thing wrong with this movie is that Micheal Cimino actually tried to pass the Grand Cascades for the mountains of Pennsylvania. The nerve. This move is a classic. A portrait of the lives of Russian immigrant steel workers in a American town shaken to their core by a horrible war. DeNiro, Walken and Savage at their best. Streep is hypnotic in her film debut, and Cazale will leave you biting your nails. They don't make actors like these anymore, and Hollywood doesn't produce stories like these anymore. It's far from sappy and truly provockative.

The Deer Hunter is guranteed to put you to sleep after 11 pm, which makes it an instant classic. You'll have to put your thinking cap on. This is no Rambo and it's not Apolocalypse Now (another classic). So don't even compare. The Deer Hunter stands alone.

Forget about "You talking to me?!".

"This is This!"

On a DVD note: The transfer is terrific. The sound is fantastic. A 20 year old classic is reborn. If they only waited 5 more years....A special edition would be nice.

Movie Review: One of the Greatest Films of All Time
Summary: 5 Stars

One of the few Hollywood depictions of the Vietnam war that actually shows the communists as bad guys. (For Hollywood, that's much like the Catholic Church portraying the Virgin Mary as a villain.) Michael Cimino's epic (and it is indeed an epic) shows us the Russian Orthodox world of a group of small-town Pennsylvania men on the verge of being shipped off to the war. We see the camaraderie of male friendship (hunting, partying, drinking, playing pool) juxtaposed against the brutal reality of war and its effect on veterans' lives once they return home. This film contains some of the most graphic war scenes ever filmed--the gut wrenching (and stomach turning) Russian roulette scene lasts nearly 15 minutes. And later on in the film there is another Russian roulette scene, filmed in the same graphic detail as the first. The Deer Hunter is one of the greatest films of all time. Although a long film, it's not grandiose like most other Hollywood war movies. It's basically realistic. And yes, the communists are the bad guys, you arrogant snot-nosed spoiled punk.

Movie Review: Worth each and every Oscar it earned
Summary: 5 Stars

And it did earn its Oscars. The Best Picture 1978, Best Director, Best Supporting Actor for Christopher Walken are 3 of the 5 total hunks of metal this film brought home.
The movie is a bit long at 3 hours, but it really does need to be that long. You are taken on a journey from small-town Pennsylvania to the jungles of Viet Nam and then back home, where everything is different for De Niro. And for Walken's character, things are definately not the same after his tour in Viet Nam.
This film came out when I was about 5 or 6 years old, so I am NOT going to pretend I saw it way back right after the war, etc, etc, my experience is through history books and other references, including veterans themselves. I cannot tell about the authenticity of the film, nor tell you I relate. I can say that this is a fantastic movie of people in the Viet Nam War, the common person in the war, and how what they did and saw changed them as people.
Very highly recommended, but ensure you make the 3 hours need to watch it front to back.

Movie Review: You want to see this movie
Summary: 5 Stars

This is a great movie and most certainly deserved the oscar for best picture in 1978. Not to mention it is Michael Cimino's second and he makes it his best directorial entry. A group of Pennsylvania Deer Hunters who are also industrial workers in a factory enlist and go fight in the Vietnam conflict. If you are a fan of great cinematography you will love this picture because it offers the gallery of beautiful countryside landscapes and and excellent score to go along with them. Robert De Niro is great(in his favorite role as an actor) That was a qoute made by himself in his biography The Untouchable. The Vietnam scenes are remotley disturbing when they introduce the "Russian Roliet" to the soldiers. It is also an opprotunity to see Christopher Walken in his oscar winning performance. Please at least rent this or even better! next time it is on AMC take a look at it. You won't regret it or feel cheated
Directed by Michael Cimino
Robert De Niro, Christopher Walken, Meryl Streep, and John Savage.

Movie Review: One Shot
Summary: 5 Stars

We've seen alot of Veitnam war movies since Deer Hunter. Apocalypse Now, Full Metal Jacket, Oliver Stone's trilogy & various others. All have great moments, especially Kubrick's version, but Cimino's "Deer Hunter" is the Grand Daddy,in my opinion. De Niro's incredible acting is only equalled by Walken,Streep,Cazale & Savage. It's Streep's first film appearance & Cazale's last~(They were a couple at the time, Cazale died of cancer before the film's release)~. I have never taken the Academy Awards seriously since they awarded Jon Voigt & Jane Fonda oscars for "Coming Home"~(another Vietnam film)~ instead of De Niro & Streep for "Deer Hunter". Walken walked away with best supporting actor,& deservedly so. It is an incredibly powerful movie. The DVD,although a little dark looking,is great to watch. To be able to access any scene...I still marvel. This is a film you HAVE to see if you have any kind of love for the movies.
