Movie Reviews of The Dead Hate the Living

Movie Review: Undead Loves The Dead Hate The Living
Summary: 5 Stars

I first came across this movie at Blockbuster, back when VHS still mattered (shows how old I am) and was amused by the premise. Watched it and I was freaking it due to its awesomeness, so I went and copied the movie (who remembers hooking up 2 VCRs to dub tapes lol) and watched it over and over. The tape soon went into storage with all my other tapes when I moved cross country, and eventually found it on DVD with bonuses galore on Amazon so I had to order it.

It is a great movie and another Full Moon triumph in my opinion, the characters are cool and realistic (I know plenty of horror freaks like that, myself included), and the makeup and FX are awesome. Some of the visual FX are a bit silly due to, Im sure, budget and space constraints, such as gun barrel flash, fire in a hallway and Gaunt being electrocuted, but they kind of add to the film rather then detract. The horror references are abound, and could make for an awesome drinking game (Fulci Lives, DRINK! Gino DeRossi, DRINK!) not to mention the Full Moon references, make the film even mroe amusing for those who follow Full Moon or horror movies in general.

The bonus features on this are kickass, thats always a big selling point for me on any DVD. I love watching the Videozone segments on the Full Moon releases, and this one is just as cool as the others. The Penis Flytrap music video rocks, their music is always great to listen to and fits the movie so well. The interviews with the cast and crew are great, giving insight to the film, along with the commentary track.

I highly recommend this to anyone who loves horror movies, jokey cheesy horror movies, or Full Moon fans!

Summary of The Dead Hate the Living

DEAD HATE THE LIVING - DVD Movie
What could be better than a bunch of Italian horror buffs making their own zombie flick in a spooky abandoned hospital? Being attacked by the real thing, of course. The Dead Hate the Living echoes with such American genre classics as Phantasm, The Evil Dead, and Scream, but it's ultimately a love letter to the nightmarish scenarios and visual freakouts of Italian horror pictures. The hapless crew discovers a creepy black altar (complete with its own decorative corpse) and incorporates it into their film. When their scripted ceremony opens a portal from another dimension and unleashes an army of rampaging zombies, the hallways become flooded in red and blue and green pools of light for no good reason other than it looks cool. The hospital is suddenly adrift in an alternate reality because... well, just because. Writer-director Dave Parker never tries to explain the madness (a zombie's exclamation, "Hate the living! Love the dead!" is as much motive as we're offered), choosing instead to simply plunge viewers into the inspired mayhem. What makes it all work is a love of the genre, a cast of energetic, likable performers, cool zombie makeup, and a sure, stylish hand. Horror movie mavens will pick up on oodles of clever references (a bumper sticker that reads "Fulci lives"; a zombie king commanding, "Make them die... slowly"), but these are merely asides in an accomplished, clever, and remarkably entertaining indie horror riff. --Sean Axmaker
