Movie Reviews of The Dark (2005)

Movie Review: Doing Well Up Till The End...
Summary: 3 Stars

All right this is not an amazing movie, nor a truly well- done film. Yet for a movie with its status it actually was pretty good most of the time. It was understandable, the cast was all right, but it is the plot overall that keeps you tuned in. I won't spoil anything but it is the story that kept me. And the story did get a little what you would call, spooky, in the middle towards the end.

And up till the end I felt the movie was not going to disappoint. And yet then it did. I'm sure others got the ending but for me I was quite lost at the end. It got really messy and not much was explained. The twist in the end was so odd and I didn't appreciate it. Must every horror ending turn so completely around? It gets annoying after awhile. It is not surprising as they want it to be but just downright confusing most of the time. The ending was going well and they should have left it that way but instead right at the end they give you a twist, and not a very desirable one at least to me. And the alternative ending makes even less sense to me!

So yes although throughout most of the movie it was all right and even a little scary, both the endings themselves, at least to me, are poor and so terribly unnecessary. I hope, reader, that if you rent out the movie, you can make more sense of the conclusion than I did.

Movie Review: Good start, ending awful....
Summary: 3 Stars

I picked up this horror film because it was filmed in Wales and I love looking at all the beautiful countryside. The plot is a fairly simple one: a mother(Ada) and her daughter Sara go to visit her estranged husband James (Sean Bean) in distant Wales. Bean owns a cottage by the sea formerly owned by a ruthless cult leader who instigated a mass suicide of his flock in the 50's. It comes as no surprise, that the home is haunted. When Sara turns up missing and a creepy girl Ebril shows up on the property Ada begins to search for her daughter which turns up some horrifying revelations.

Minor Spo1lers below:

At first I found The Dark very compelling. The inclusion of Welsh myth in the form of the underworld was fascinating. The girl Ebril's was intriguing. I felt the film lost steam and emotional integrity during the frequent unnecessary trepanning, and Sara's reaction to being slapped once by her mother seemed a little bit of an overreaction. Sara seemed a very level-headed girl. Also the afterlife was weird and I felt that the girl Ebril seemed hardly deserving of such punishment.

I found the ending stupid and a disappointment. It seemed almost like the filmaker had written 2 endings and couldn't decide which one he preferred.

3 stars. Good but flawed.

Movie Review: THE DARK (2005)
Summary: 3 Stars

"The Dark" stars Sean Bean and Maria Bello, both which are great actors who have been in some major films over the last couple of years. The movie takes a while to get going, but it is interesting and you are really never sure what is going to happen next, which is one of this films bonus's. The acting is better than a large number of horror films out there, with both Bean and Bello. These days there are a huge amount of horrible low budget trash horror films being made and this is not one of them. The special effects and suspense are even good in this film, which says more for it than a lot of movies in this genre. There are some parts of the story that are difficult for some people to understand and it's obvouisly not a flawless film. However, it is definitely a movie to check out.

Movie Review: LIFE FOR A LIFE
Summary: 3 Stars

THE RING. RING 2. THE GRUDGE. SILENT HILL. DARK WATERS. Notice how today's demonic or villainous kids are mostly little girls? Hmmm...THE DARK is directed by GINGER SNAP's John Fawcett, and his visual style is arresting and evocative. The Welsh countryside and seascape is stunning, and the movie has a creepy portentuous atmosphere. Maria Bello and Sean Bean are always fun to watch and they do well in their roles of the parents of their little girl who drowns in the ocean. The suicidal and viscious sheep are also very eerie. The movie has two endings, the original being more downbeat, while the alternate offers a more softened conclusion. There's nothing really new in the story, but its effectively spooky.

Movie Review: Not So Spooky After All
Summary: 3 Stars

This movie had some suspense but was not scary. Adele and her daughter arrive at the father's house. The only thing you gather is that something happened Sarah and her mother and they promised not to tell her father about it. You get a first hint that the place could be haunted when Adele visions that she wakes up and can't find her daughter. She goes to the edge of the cliff and a young girl pushes her off. The thing I could not understand about the movie is why Adele had as many visions as she did. If you liked "The Ring" or "Dark Water" then you will like this one as well.
