Movie Reviews of The Darjeeling Limited

Movie Review: Surprisingly Entertaining- A Masterpiece
Summary: 5 Stars

I just love movies that open up a whole set of emotion by allowing one to live and feel along with the characters without forcing them into a pre-prepared emotional ride.

The film spoke to me so retrospectively. My my father had just died in a flood and I had to cut short my harrowing travels through Nepal and India. I had to rush home and attend a memorial service and face my two sisters who I haven't seen in seven years and a mom who I haven't seen in thirteen. Just like the movie we all had to face each other as people changed by time and tragedy and find that we dislike each other greatly but find out inevitably that we are unbreakable in our love for each other because we are family. And, oh yes just like the brothers in the movie, we were smoking in my father's garage because cleaning a flooded-out house just sucks the breath out of you.

It is to me one of the most well-crafted, well assembled and visually appealing movies to date. I have always like Wes Andersen since the World Aquatic with Steve Zissou. He has a way of manipulating visual atmosphere and arranging scenes with spare dialogue making it richer without overcrowding it. He is a whole new style on his own while somehow borrowing from the past. I do agree with some when they say he is a genius.

Movie Review: Most overlooked movie of 2007
Summary: 5 Stars

When the award season rolled around, I was disappointed to find that this movie was virtually ignored by them all. I thought Wes would be a lock for best original screenplay at the Oscars, but alas, no. This was easily the best movie of 2007 that no one saw (well, I saw it at my theater). I don't know why the studio didn't get behind it and market it, but many people are probably hearing about it now for the first time.
I've seen all of Wes Anderson's movies, and for me, this one falls right behind my favorite: Rushmore - Criterion Collection. The Darjeeling Limited is a very funny, smart, bitter sweet and at times a surreal character study of three brothers searching for their mother after the mess that was their father's funeral. The story is very original, the movie flows effortlessly, the cinematography is superb and the soundtrack is the best of all of Anderson's movies. The dry style of comedy may not be everyone's cup of tea, but I personally love it.
I can't recommend this one enough. If you missed it in theaters, here's your shot at redemption.

Movie Review: Wes being Wes
Summary: 5 Stars

I am especially communicating to those who have seen Wes Anderson's movies but haven't seen this yet.

I am a big fan of Wes Anderson's movies, and I think The Life Aquatic is his best. My favorite things about his movies are the way they look (in both the technical and artistic sense), and the understated lack of normalcy of the way the characters talk. On the weirdness rainbow, it's more mature than quirkiness, and milder than eccentricity. Also, everything is deliberate, so there isn't that "improv" vibe at all.

If I had never seen this movie, and I was dropped in a seat in front of a screen with this on it without me knowing what it was, I'd figure out it was a Wes Anderson film as soon as Adrien Brody was running for the train in slow motion to some song from the 60s or 70s. That is a compliment.

Wes Anderson has the best formula around, so I think he'd be an idiot to mess with it. All his tricks and gimmicks, and many actors from his previous movies can be found in here. I get enough variety from all the movies made by everyone else, so when I see a Wes Anderson movie, I want to see a Wes Anderson movie.

Movie Review: GREAT movie
Summary: 5 Stars

I had seen the movie trailers and immediately knew this wasn't a Hollywood commercial movie, just started to wonder when would I have a chance to see it, since I live in Mexico and non-commercial movies are seldom shown in theater screens. My choices: 1.- Download a screener -horrible quality- movie, from someone who had sneaked a videocamera into a theater, or 2.- Pre-order the movie from amazon.

I went for the latter option, it took ages, but as soon as I got it and popped it in the dvd player, I was struck by uncertainty, car chase, celebrity faces, camera movements and still no words spoken. It was thrilling, fast paced, and then... it takes you deep into a families womb, brotherly bonds, secrets, communication (or lack of), complex subjacent motives, (un)attachments, needs, with a dash of casual sex and darkly fun situations; it is definitely a Great, well rounded movie, it certainly deserves watching it over in company of thinking friends (you know, the ones that don't laugh half an hour over a fart), and commenting it over a drink.

If you liked The Royal Tenenbaums, you'll like this one too, four thumbs up ;)

Movie Review: A True Original
Summary: 5 Stars

I'll never understand why people think Wes Anderson writes/directs "comedies". He certainly likes to make fun of the human condition, as well as foibles and short-comings which are, let's face it, amusing. I disagree with most of the other reviews, but all I can say is that I think Adrien Brody, Jason Schwartzman and Owen Wilson presented very individual agendas. Wilson as the control freak annoyed me for a while, until a bigger picture developed. I was entertained and amused, and "The Darjeeling Limited" was everything I would expect from a Wes Anderson film. The appearance of Anjelica Huston toward the end was accompanied by a Rolling Stones tune, which made you believe that these guys had found what they were looking for.Wes Anderson is not simplistic; indeed, I was moved and never bored by this episodic adventure. I love his choice of music. The DVD extras were few, but included "Hotel Chevalier", a sort of preface to Jack's character (Schwartzman), with Natalie Portman (not in the actual film). The "making-of" segment was actually about the making-of; no interviews with cast or director. Bummer. Sorry, but I enjoyed it a whole lot.
