Movie Reviews of The Damned Don't Cry

Movie Review: Crawford formula
Summary: 4 Stars

Not long after "Mildred Pierce", Joan Crawford starred in this gangster film about a woman who grew up with nothing, got married to a mean guy, had a child who died ... then decided to pursue a better life for herself at any price. Sounds a little like Mildred Pierce, but that's OK because Joan did these dramatic roles extremely well. And who could blame her for cashing in on the success of Mildred Pierce.

"the Damned Don't Cry" is an interesting film for any Crawford fan because she is once again very watchable in every scene and not just for her fine acting. Her face is captivating. As she grew older, her face became more prominent ... those big eyes, those big eyelashes. She almost became a parody of herself.

Crawford was not classically trained yet always delivered fine performances every time. This film is high up at the top, and is deserving of a place in your collection.

Movie Review: Damned if you do
Summary: 4 Stars

Don't know where this film has been languishing or why but I'm glad it's finally available. This is the type of story Joan Crawford knows best - rags to riches, school of hard knocks with touches of sentiment. Her character is, shall we say opportunistic. She has relationships with no fewer than four men in this story, each a rung on the ladder but who also exact an emotional investment from Joan. There is no bigger movie star in this movie than Joan Crawford, but the rest of the cast hold their own, including Steve Cochrane, playing his trademark slick character. The audio commentary by Vincent Sherman, the director was not as interesting as it could have been. He tended to reiterate the story including bits of dialog that were perfectly evident without him but he did add the odd tidbit regarding the making of the film. The picture quality is crisp and clean. Recommended.

Movie Review: Fabulous trashy camp
Summary: 4 Stars

The Damnded Don't Cry is one of Joan's best performances in a trashy, camp film noir that while not entirely credible is still wonderfully entertaining. Joan's role is laughably too young for her which only adds to the outlandish camp quality of the film. David Brian is his usual tough and creepy self while Steve Cochran provides vintage eye-candy!
Not to be taken seriously, simply enjoy this one in spite of yourself.

Movie Review: Mediocre fare for Crawford fans
Summary: 3 Stars

Very average mobster film elevated only by Crawford's star presence as she channels several incarnations of her previous successful characters....there's a little Letty Lynton, a bit of Sadie McKee, Sadie Thompson and Crystal Allen, with a healthy dash of Mildred Pierce thrown in.

Fun to watch Joan in action, spitting out vitriol in "brassy dame" speak, but it's a pretty weak picture. The transfer, however, is excellent and LOOKS wonderful.

There's a fun little featuerette with some background info on the movie and its cast. Unfortunately, the commentary track by Director Vincent Sherman (the first interview I've ever had him where he didn't brag about his phsyical love affair with Crawford--refreshing!) is useless and offers no insight...the guy just rambles along telling you the plot of the exact movie you're watching. Any directorial anecdotes and/or background info is almost nonexistent.

Movie Review: Not Bad......
Summary: 3 Stars

This is not the quintessential Crawford film. But it does have its moments, particularly at the film's climax towards the end. It has gangsters galore with Joan her typical shopgirl on the make for a better life. The film is uneven. It starts strong, then vacillates back and forth until the climax toward the end which finishes strong. Crawford gives a strong performance and is a much stronger actress here than she is usually given credit for. The DVD has parts that are grainy but for the most part it is a good transfer. There is a useless documentary with Vincent Sherman and a documentary called "The Crawford Formula" which lasts about 32 minutes but really isn't all that interesting.
