Movie Reviews of The Damned Don't CryMovie Review: Terrific Crawford Film I was Unaware Of. Summary: 5 Stars
This is a wonderful film I had never heard of before or had seen on television. Joan Crawford lives a very unattractive life on the oil fields with her husband, son and her parents. The purchase of a bicycle and a subsequent argument with her husband over the cost causes the death of her son. Ethel, Joan's character, decides to leave her husband for New York City to begin a new life. She begins a life as a model and dance girl eventually getting herself involved with gangsters. While the life is attractive for a long while, there is a downside, she realizes the men she is hanging out with are killers and aren't above killing her if she fails to live up to their standards too. The film moves along swiftly and at an exciting pace. I am so glad I saw this film and sorry that I had missed it earlier. Joan Crawford shines in the film and the story is terrific. An added plus for the DVD is film commentary by the director of the film. His commentary is very good and interesting.
Movie Review: Excellent Crawford Film Summary: 5 Stars
Joan Crawford plays Edith Whitehead, the worn-down wife of an oil worker who walks out on him after the accidental death of their only child. As another reviewer has noted, this film is an interesting hybrid--both a woman's film and a film noir. It's a woman's film in the way she goes from rags to riches and changes her identity to that of Ethel Forbes, a wealthy socialite. It's noir in the sense that she accomplishes this by becoming a tough-talking gangster's moll. But she's not as smart as she thinks she is and her luck turns bad. In the vocabulary of women's films, she has to punished for daring to abandon her husband. But female viewers got to vicariously see her wear a lot of terrific clothes and get treated (at least temporarily) like a queen. Crawford acts well in this film, with a great supporting cast. A well-crafted and unjustly neglected film.
Movie Review: The film is alive with the sound of Joan Summary: 5 Stars
This is a one woman show although it clearly was not meant that way. There are several good performances here besides Crawfords. You can feel she's in a battle to survive the studio system and age! She dominates every scene and it's great fun. For melodrama it's quite a good and intense movie. Crawford leaves her teeth marks on everyone and everything. Good supporting cast and that's all they are!
Movie Review: SUSPENSE, DRAMA, MOBSTERS, GREAT ACTING & THE BEAUTIFUL JOAN CRAWFORD ~ A MOVIE THAT HAS EVERYTHING!!!!! Summary: 5 Stars
I just love this fast-paced, action drama. Sexy, Joan Crawford, Handsome, David Brian, et al., perform brilliantly. The dialog is very cleverly well-written, and the sound and picture is of very good quality. A must see the the Joan Crawford and Film Noir fans!!!!!
