Movie Reviews of The Cutting Edge

Movie Review: Wonderful Sappy Fun
Summary: 5 Stars

Usually I scoff at romantic comedies. Fluff gives me indigestion. However, this movie I LOVE. It is fluffy, it isn't necessarily a display of artistic genius...but somehow it resonates- and not just with me apparently, given all the great reviews here. Doug was a brilliant college hockey skater whose career ended during a game in the Calgary Olympics- not just his career falls apart when he loses some of his peripheral vision, but his personal life too: his college scholarship is canceled, and he's stuck working in a factory and playing in hockey bar leagues afterwards. Meanwhile, Kate is a beautiful, wealthy and popular figure skater who just cannot find a partner to skate with- and put up with her. She's got heaps of attitude and zingers for all occasions. She also had a traumatic experience at Calgary, and is basically stuck without a partner.
Russian coach Pamchenko, Kate's trainer, when told by Kate's father to find her a partner, is at the end of the line until he remembers a "beautiful skater"- and thus Doug is recruited.
What ensues is lots of verbal sparring, hard work, and subtle signs that perhaps Kate and Doug aren't that different after all-and most importantly- form a perfect partnership in every way.
Moira Kelly is not your typical glam actress- her charm is subtle and elegant. She is very believable as aristocratic Kate- her eyes' performance alone deserve an Oscar. D.B. Sweeney is good-looking in an tough guy kind of way. Yet, they're not just flat stereotypes- Doug is tough- but he's also very kind-and fragile: he needs direction in his life, a goal. He has talent, but risks seeing it never develop because of a lack of opportunity. Kate is a pain in the butt, but she's also very vulnerable, filled with resentment toward her father and the expectations thrown upon her. She is a perfectionist, but no one has ever asked her what she wants from her life. There's a lot more going on under the surface here.
I like this story because it is a Cinderella story- but for both characters. Both are transformed because of the love they come to share. It's little things- like glances exchanged- that state that the movie is about relationships, partnerships, love, trust and faith.
It's a flawed movie in many ways, but it's a heck of a fun story. You forgive all because of the good acting of, frankly, the whole cast- but especially because of the charismatic leads.
Definitely a good watch before these Winter Olympics!!
