Movie Reviews of The Cure - Festival 2005

Movie Review: Could have been much better
Summary: 3 Stars

Well, I'm not one to normally complain about anything The Cure puts out but this DVD could have been much better. The song selection is overall very good, mixing songs from every studio release except for TIB and WMS, I believe. They play heavy on material from the era when Porl was previously in the band. As a four-piece, the songs that normally require keyboards are unique here with Porl filling in the keyboard parts on guitar and there has been no other "official" live releases for more than a few songs on this DVD such as "Shiver and Shake", "M", "The Baby Screams" or "Signal to Noise." I can't complain about the sound quality, although the packaging did not indicate that that the 5.1 surround was DTS only and not Dolby. I prefer DD over DTS but the stereo surround mix was fine. The fact that the press release and the packaging do warn you that the video is essentially of the guerilla/audience/amateur quality still does not prepare you for the actual picture quality. My God, I just could not continue to watch the DVD. It hurt my eyes. Going for the crappy camera/grainy out of focus quality angle was a poor choice. The cheesy blurring and double images nonense was worse than watching an old Black Sabbath video on VH1 Classic. I've got better quality (even today after multiple viewings) of a VHS recording of The Cure I made 15 years ago from a concert from Germany that MTV aired! This DVD is just plain unwatchable. I will simply turn off the video and listen to the audio. This only makes the absolute need for re-releasing "In Orange" and "Show" onto DVD sooner rather than later. Too bad. This could have been a much better release for Cure fans.

Movie Review: Worth it only for the collection
Summary: 3 Stars

This dvd I was a little excited about so I read some reviews on here to see what people had to say about it. I would have to agree on the negative reviews with this dvd. The quality isn't very good. Too many cheesy effects over the video which to me is very distracting. This dvd was taken from 9 different concerts on their Festival tour in various countries to very huge audiences. This is also the first tour with Porl Thompson since Wish. The song list is pretty good. They actualy play some rare songs in here that I haven't seen them play live in a while but some of the playing is a little sloppy and Robert's singing sounds lazy at times. Probably the worst part about this dvd is that there are no keyboards at all. This was a very big mistake from Robert as I always thought keyboards were an essential part for The Cure. Oh sure Three Imaginary Boys was without keyboards. But that was 1979 and the band was just getting started. After many albums later all with keyboard we all expect to hear keyboards. I am a huge cure fan and have collected a lot of their work including bootlegs. This is worth having for the collection but don't expect an amazing concert film like In Orange. When they will ever put In Orange or Show on DVD I have no idea but we really need those. In fact I also agree with other reviews that Trilogy is a better live dvd then this. If you don't have Trilogy get that one first then get this. This is an ok dvd but The cCure can do better. I know this was edited by Robert Smith and I think he's gone off his rocker ever since he let the horrible Ross Robinson produce The Cure album for them.

Movie Review: One for the Fans
Summary: 3 Stars

On the plus side, this IS a great set list. The Cure are wise to haul out older songs like the Drowning Man and M. But I'll be the d-bag to just come right and say it - keyboards are sorely missed in many of these tracks. Many of these songs sound like they are being performed by a Cure cover band, and try as he might, Porl Thompson can't cover all the holes in the sound with all that guitar noodling. Very simply put, it's like eating cake that doesn't have icing on it - it's very good, but you KNOW something crucial is missing. And by the way, the camera work in this DVD is as bad as many people are saying it is, with a distinct "bootleg"-ish look and feel to it. Having said that, the Cure have never been terribly visually exciting anyway, so that alone doesn't flaw this set. I dock this DVD because of the before mentioned lack of keys , and because of the glaring lack of any bonus footage - interviews or some backstage things would have been nice, and I have searched in vain for those dreadful "easter eggs" that normally crop up on DVD releases like these. As it is, I can't rate this as high as the "Trilogy" DVD but I can recommend it for fans of the Cure.

Movie Review: Okay but not Great
Summary: 3 Stars

This DVD is okay. I'm watching it on a Sony Bravia XBR2 1080i LCD and a Pioneer DVR-533H. It is really grainy most of the time. The actual film footage is not that good in comparison to the "Trilogy" which is short one star of being a five because it isn't in HD. A lot of the back lighting totally blinds out the band members at times. The night cameras were just not setup for going from really dark to blinding light. The audio is good and plays awesome. It has a great song list of most of my favorite Cure songs. Not all the trendy songs like on most tours. My favorite album is Bloodflowers. I was kinda disappointed that there weren't any song off of this classic cd. That's okay there's plenty to make up for this. Overall this is still a good dvd for real Cure fans. It's pretty cool seeing Porl back and nailing all the songs. Even a few off of "The Cure" cd. What this dvd lacks in video it makes up for in audio. That's probably why the price is so low. Regardless it's still a good dvd to have in your collection. I'm glad I got it and I always buy whatever they dish out. Crank it up!

Movie Review: Good...But........
Summary: 3 Stars

Bit of a comedown vs. "Trilogy" and "Orange." Seems like Bob and the boys got a bit too carried away with optical effects. Way over-produced! These "cheesy" rock-video gimmicks in combination with too much crowd noise really took away from the music. The music incidentally is just fine. Nothing great though. So..worth getting? Well, your life would be complete without this DVD. If you can get a good deal on one get it - especially if you're a real fan. Wouldn't pay list for it though.

BTW, you can find DVDs of "Orange" if you Google it and look carefully. Some Internet "entrepreneurs" sell it for $10 or $20. And worth every penny. Quality of them - at least the one I got - was superb - as is the music and production.
