Movie Review: love cats
Summary: 5 Stars

comprehensive, powerful sights and sounds from innovators who still sound great after all these years.

Movie Review: Great DVD
Summary: 5 Stars

I'm not a writer, so I'll dispense with the review. If you're a Cure fan, you'll love it.

Movie Review: Fat Bob and the old boys play out
Summary: 4 Stars

Okay, in case you're not a fan, this is the most recent version of the Cure, just Robert Smith, his long-time running mate Simon Gallup on bass, and Jason Cooper on drums, a 12 year veteran. Joining them for the moment (and maybe longer it seems) is Porl Thompson on guitar, who hasn't been around since the 90's. Because these guys know each other and the music so well, there are no rough spots here, this is very familar territory. Personally I don't think Porl adds that much, his guitar is accomplished, but it lacks a distinctive voice to my ears. And I really think a keyboard is necessary to fill out the Cure sound. As a result I think this feels a little spare (they do "Plainsong" and it sounds okay, but . . . odd). It does force Bob to play guitar a lot, and that's a good thing, he was handing off a lot to Perry in concert when I saw them last.

Other than that, it's just a pure concert piece, very familiar camera angles, not that there's anything wrong with that, I just want to see them play anyway. But the recording is a little grainy in places, like it was trying for a pixelated special effect look (see the opening frames) and some other silly effects like in "Heaven", which also make Bob look like a vampire who just lifted something heavy. It even gets black and white in places. Compared to the sparkling look of "Trilogy", this is a real letdown in quality.

My final comment is that the setlist is very . . . settled. I sure would like to see them play something absolutely new some day, why not a Join the Dots concert? Something like that. I mean, how many times can you watch Bob do "A Forest"? Okay, lots, me too, but a fresh set would be nice (an exception is "Push", which I've never seen them play).

So, I'll give it a 4, because it is the Cure, and there's never enough material as far as I'm concerned, and there's 30 songs here, very generous. And because this is priced remarkably low, like Trilogy. That makes up for the $20+ prices on the "enhanced" CD's, so the ledger's square again. Thanks Bob.

Movie Review: Please don't expect another Trilogy
Summary: 4 Stars

First of all, I don't believe that I could give anything the Cure ever released anything lower than 5 stars, but this DVD does have some flaws. first of all, i will be the first to admit that I am not thrilled about this 4 man lineup. I love the return of Porl, but a Cure without a keyboardist is like chewing gum without any teeth.....well maybe not that bad, but you get my point. Don't get me wrong though, they sound wonderful in the songs they play, but something is just lacking.
Now to the video quality. This is like a mix of home video and professional shots. By no means does this come near Trilogy visually. This is more of a raw, uncut version and probably more realistic. I can see why many people would not like watching something like this. The scenes jump clear to hazy, then back to clear, and could get annoying.
Those would be my 2 biggest complaints. Otherwise, the DVD sound is beautiful, and song list is nice also. Of course, a lot of my favorite songs would be pretty difficult to play without a keyboard.

Overall: A must have for any Cure fans.

Movie Review: Festival 2005
Summary: 4 Stars

This is a great video concert. I loved the fact that they played some of ther songs from the early days. Songs that at one time, they had vowed never to play again. At times the cameraman got a bit funky with the video, panning in and out, or unfocusing the lense, or adding a 3D lighting scheme. This became an annoyance but the music was GOOD!
