Movie Reviews of The Crucible

Movie Review: A Superbly Directed and Acted Film
Summary: 5 Stars

It is rare nowadays that I come out of a movie feeling moved and enlightened. Suffice it to say that when I first saw The Crucible in the theatre several years ago, I left the movie understanding a bit more about human nature and a greater appreciation for the power of group hysteria. This film draws on the fine acting talents of Daniel Day-Lewis, Winona Ryder (in her best role ever), and Joan Allen. Not only is the dialogue brilliant, but the emotional content is incredibly affecting. I am so glad to see it finally on DVD. In this day and age of disposable art, it is heartening to see that movies of this caliber are still being made (even if it is with less frequency).

Movie Review: A brilliant & powerfull look at condemnation & forgiveness
Summary: 5 Stars

As for all the reviews that gave this film 5 stars, this is another. This story is powerful in it's own right, even more so in this amazing ensemble cast. This is the best film I have ever seen Ms Ryder in & she among a cast that makes this play come alive. I have read this play & I have a CD version that I have listened to several times which was a harrowing experience to say the least. This film goes to places reading or audio alone cannot. There are also several extras including a discussion between Daniel Day-Lewis & Arthur Miller on the play: it's too short but well worth seeing. I can almost promise anyone who gets this DVD that you will not be disappointed.

Movie Review: The absence of vices doesn't add anything to virtue!
Summary: 5 Stars

In 1692, in Massachusetts, just fifty years after of the horrid incident of Loudun (go for the lucid essay of Aldous Huxley), nineteen Salem puritans were hanged by their peers after a clique of young girls are accused of witchcraft activities. Nicholas Hytner is a director who likes to take high voltage projects and materialize them (The madness of king George).

Watch this film and convince by yourself that the religious fanatics may become heretics due the excess of their own fanaticism and if not consider the case of Savonarola.

Tour de force performances, kinetic script and mesmerizing locations make the rest.

Movie Review: Great Adaptation
Summary: 5 Stars

An American history lesson, may we take heed. All around perfection, Arthur Miller's story has been transferred to film in a way stage versions just can't compete. This is about intolerance and the spread of rumors and lies into a disastrous end. May the extreme right wing of this nation take note. Daniel Day-Lewis and Joan Allen head a spectacular ensemble of performances. Mass hysteria and halluccinations brought on by tainted crops, was a possible culprit in these colonial times. One of the best arguments for the separation of Church and State ever made. The so called "Salem Witch Hunts" saw many sincere Christians falsely accused. Powerful story.

Movie Review: "God Bless You Arthur Miller"
Summary: 5 Stars

This a great adaptation of Arthur Miller's play the Crucible. The sets may not have been as historicly accurate as some would have liked them to be, but it does give you a very good idea as to about what it looked like. The dialog was very similar to the play and the play is exactly what took place and was said. the added scenes in the movie where only to help the viewers out visually. Even the characters were better shown and you got a better feeling of what they where. Arthur Miller took his own work and made it even better in the words of the towns people of Salem "God Bless You Arthur Miller".
