Movie Reviews of The CrucibleMovie Review: The Crucible: Prophetically Truthful Summary: 5 Stars
This drama illustrates a sad chapter in American history. The remarkable thing is that the evil in this story knows no age boundries. From Abigail Williams and Mercy Lewis to Giles Corey were found assailants and victims alike. This also may show a prophetic omen of the present. We have neglected, even oulawed the practice of the corporal discipline of our children. The result can be seen in the news daily: children who murder. The difference is the way they do it. Instead of crying out false allegations in courts of law, they now stalk our streets with guns and knives, or practice murder openly in our schools, as in Columbine, CO and incidents like that.
The Crucible is a grim indicator of the capability of evil in our hearts, from childhood on up. The Crucible shines a potent light on the suffering of their victims.
"I have broken faith with that woman!!!" -- Giles Corey as he laments the execution of his beloved wife, Martha.
Foolishness is bound in the heart of a child; but the rod of correction shall drive it far from him.
-- Proverbs 22:15
Movie Review: NOT SINCE I HAD A ROOT CANAL. . . Summary: 5 Stars
Not since I had to have a root canal a few years ago have I been filled with such a sense of DREAD while watching this very fine film! Though it is fictionalized - it is based on the famous Salem Witch Trials - The acting, costumes, and settings transport you back in time, (and believe me - no one in their right mind would want to stay there.) You know what is going to happen because of history, but the sense of impending doom because it was TRUE for those poor brave Americans- is palpable! People always amuse me when they refer to the "Good Ole' Days" . . . MEN with TOO MUCH POWER, some - NOT ALL of the actual victims were people of lesser means (i.e. poor people) and it all plays out! Still, great acting by a stellar cast! Certainly, a very dark and sad blemish on American history! Daniel Day-Lewis, as always was excellent, as were Ryder, Scofield, Davison, and the rest of the immensely talented cast . I highly recommend this one - some people may not like or understand the manner of speaking (which is authentic) But for me it is a must see!
Movie Review: Disturbing and well made Summary: 5 Stars
I'm not sure why I ordered this movie, given that usually I don't like too much suspence, but maybe the historical aspect of it drew me. In any event, I'm happy I've ordered it--it is very well made, the acting is unnervingly convincing, and the story makes one be VERY grateful for not living in that village at that time! The analogy to present time abuse of power, mass histerias and tendency for 'witch hunting' (though no longer in the literal sense, still very much in other finger-pointing-to-save-one's-own-face and terrorizing others to join or else...as well as pompous know-it-alls) is eerie. Ideas and locations change, but the human flock-factor seems to be an ever present enemy...
The authentic setting of the movie--down to the hens, the clothing, and the buggies--is amazing.
Loved it would be a strong word to use, but I definitely recommend it to anyone brave enough to look humanity's dark side in the face and learn some history in the process.
Movie Review: Innovative and beautiful Summary: 5 Stars
The Crucible by Arthur Miller is good as a movie and a play. The movie, starring Winona Ryder and Daniel Day-Lewis, is historically accurate with a little more. Mr. Miller has written a classic that will be remembered for years to come. Based on the true accounts of the Salem Witch Trials, Mr. Miller has brought it to life by writing the play and movie The Crucible. The film is so realistic.
The film, set in the 1600s in Salem, Massachusetts, was very good. It starts out when Winona Ryder, as Abigail Williams, is accused of dancing with the devil in the woods. Then she starts accusing people in her town of bewitching her and her friends. In the trials they begin to fake as if the accused are bewitching them then. The acting in the film is great. The scenes shot in Massachusetts were done perfectly. All-in-all the film deserves two even three or four thumbs up.
Movie Review: Wonderful, spooky, maddening Summary: 5 Stars
This should be a classic. Daniel Day Lewis as John Proctor is phenomenal. Arthur Miller's screen adaptation is mesmerizing.
In case you don't know, it's a story about the Salem Witch Trials and how the devil was really in the sidelines of the mind encouraging people to take advantage of the lunacy that was happening. Upright Christians lured by the possibility of greater wealth and revenge begin to see the devil possessing those they don't care for, or those who own the land that they would like to own for themselves. It's a common thought that the whole Witch Hunt was just a huge land grab.
There's great drama, little bits of humor, and a simplicity of setting that draws you in. Definitely a must see.
