Movie Reviews of The Crow - Wicked PrayerMovie Review: Why would you want a good thing to die? Summary: 5 Stars
First of all, I haven't seen this movie, yet I'm giving it a five star rating. Why you ask? Because I'd rather assume good things than bad, unlike a lot of people that come to spread negativity about something they are just as clueless as I am about. And frankly, this series of movies has been far stronger than most that are released into theatres. The first was perfect in my opinion, and can never be duplicated. Yet they decided to do a sequel. There's no reason not to, since it deals with completely new characters, with the exception of Sarah. City of Angels, unfortunately tried to copy elements of the first and thusly set itself up for criticism for copying the original. But it was good when looked at without the shadow of the first looming over it.
Another problem with City of Angels was that it dealt with a father who lost his son, which isn't an attachment everyone will appreciate. Almost everyone has loved someone at some point, which is part of why the first one resonated so well. However, many who are not parents can only imagine the pain of losing a child, so it was harder to reach the same emotional heights the first one did.
Salvation was a return to the lost girlfriend idea, but was very differemt in that the Crow of that film wasn't murdered, but was executed for murdering the loved one he came back to avenge. Of course he was innocent, but this was the first of many ideas that hadn't been done before, including not having colorful, comic book style villains.
Now for Wicked Prayer. Edward Furlong seems to be very much in the vein of the previous actors in the installments, as he isn't clean cut, but rather a darker person, who has rough edges. This makes him seem an unlikely romantic hero, but he has always seemed to express emotions in different ways. He seems to be a person who hides his feelings under a mask of anger and rebellion. My point in all this is to show that a lot of people seem to be basing their opinions of him on his performance in Terminator 2, when he has built an impressive career since then, and seems to be very capable of channeling the mindset necessary for the Crow.
As someone who has seen the first three and eagerly awaits this installment, look at the originals and tell me if they really seem to be lessening in quality. This has been a series with endless possibilities, as the concept is one that everyone can identify with in some respect. So wait until this movie actually comes out to bash it. If it sucks, I'll be right there with you. But from what I've seen in the past, I have no doubt I won't have to eat my words.
Movie Review: Classic Crow Summary: 5 Stars
This film, of all the sequels, matches the original the most. Beautiful story, and performances par excellance from Edward Furlong and David Boreanaz (they finally prove that they're not just a kid carried around by a Terminator and a tormented vampire with a soul).
Perhaps the movie's story doesn't directly coicide with the book, but I can forgive that, I'm not that much of a purist. Heck, look at the Brandon Lee film and compare it to the graphic novel! They only share a passing resemblance with each other.
The story of Jimmy Cuervo and Lily Ignites-The-Dawn is a poignant Romeo and Juliet romance. Lily fights to prove to everyone that Jimmy is a truly good person at heart, despite a terrible mistake he made in the past; all Jimmy wants is Lily, and to have people just leave him alone.
Of course, neither Jimmy or Lily get their wish. Just before they can run away to get married and live in peace, Luc Crash pops into their lives, along with his girlfriend Lola, and companions Pestilence, Famine, and War. Needless to say, Crash himself is Death. Jimmy and Crash used to be friends, in high school and in jail. Crash has a bad repayment of friendship in mind: killing Lily and Jimmy, tearing out Jimmy's heart so he can stick it in his own chest, then allowing his girlfriend to steal Lily's eyes so she can have magical Sight, and prepares to cast dark magic that will open a door to the underworld and let Lucifer out.
When the Crow arrives to help Jimmy put the wrong back to right, the story evolves to the darkly beautiful and stark world of raging vengeance. Every time another of the "Four Horsemen" fell, I felt the need to roar my approval aloud. These are people who deserve their deaths, and Jimmy deals that death with all of the Crow's unique mix of fury, sorrow and madness. Its climactic ending with the powers of darkness battling the power of the Crow is a truly inspired piece of filmmaking.
Lily's brother: "One thing the town agrees on, we all hate you, Jimmy."
Jimmy: "Well, damn, I gotta fire my publicist!"
I probably misquoted that a bit, but it proves that there's still an element of dark, bitter humor that makes a person smirk despite themselves.
I love this movie and will always treasure it as one of the finest in my DVD library.
Movie Review: Please stop bring up Brandon Lee Summary: 5 Stars
What the idiot who wrote the review calling for the deaths of the sequels directors doesn't realize is that if Brandon Lee was still alive and making movies, he couldn't have been in any of the sequels! Each movie, like each series of books, was about a different person. A different situation and a different view of being granted the chance to right a wrong with powers granted from beyond. Know the source. I will view this movie as I did the other sequels, and as I do all sequels, as a movie on it's own without the lingering preconceptions of the first. So many people bitch and moan that "...wasn't as good as the first." The Matrix series, the Star Wars series, and the Crow series. Let go, people. Then this guy says something about a prequel with Brandon Lee. About what?! His life as a struggling musican. It would be a touching love story that ends in a murder. What would that have to do with the Crow? Brandon Lee would have went on to have a great career and made many good movies, but none of them would have been another Crow. Get over it!!!
UPDATE:
OK, I've seen the movie, and it sucks sooooo much a$$ I wish I can get that 2 hours back!!! It was terrible. I stick to my earlier startment, no harm should come to the director...but the writter on the other hand... I have a strong feeling that Dennis Hopper ad-libed every line he said! To paraphrase Calculon..."That movie was so bad I think it gave me cancer!"
Movie Review: A Sub-Standard Film Summary: 5 Stars
This film really lacked direction, very little substance to carry the movie through and take us on an entertaining / fulfilling 90 min journey. It started off well but it got a lot worse as the film progressed. I feel it was a complete rush to complete the movie and this is obvious.
The script should of been reworked until they had something worthy of filming. The novel itself "Wicked Prayer" was great I read it before it was adapted onto film and it was a whole lot better than this. They should have taken the time to get it right and produce something of quality worthy of the title "The Crow".
I didn't mind Edward Furlong and David Boreanaz as they did the best with what they had to work with but most of the remaining cast was instantly forgetable especially the rest of the villians.
I had pre-ordered this film months in advance and couldn't wait for it's release but it left me bitterly disappointed. On a good point though the soundtrack was amazing but that is not even being made available to fans. Rent before buying this trust me you don't want to part with your hard earned cash before you know for sure that you want this in your dvd collection.
If you have the first Crow movie with Brandon Lee than that's all you need. It was the only film with substance and quality and a cast / perfomance that was truly memorable.
Movie Review: maiden0228 Summary: 5 Stars
This movie caught a lot of flack before it ever came out. I found it interesting that so many people were quick to condemn a movie they had never seen. Well I've seen it and I have to say that I absolutely loved it. It has it's flaws, but all of the films had them. Yes even the coveted first film. The flaws in this one have to be a supposed indian chief father who can't let go of his true mexican heritage. While he is a good actor, he didn't pull off the indian heritage. The other would be the fact that Tara Reid is an absolutely horrible actress. Dennis Hopper's character El Nino is somewhat ridiculous but adds a little comic relief. David Boreanaz (BIG FAN OF HIS) provides good character arch and we all know he plays a bad guy very well. Edward Furlong is a smokin good Crow. Each film has to be viewed as an individual picture with little to no comparisons to any of the others. That's the point of each of these films. The story that sets this apart from the others is the fact that all the previous films were based on innocents who met a terrible end. This one doesn't hold true to that. In a way, every one of them is innocent and not all at the same time. If you are a Crow fan you absolutely have to watch this. If you haven't seen any of the films this is definitely watch worthy. I highly recommend it.
