Movie Reviews of The Crimson RiversMovie Review: Blood Glacier Summary: 4 Stars
I have been a fan of Jean Reno's since I saw "The Big Blue" and "The Professional". Best known in the U.S. for his performance in "Mission: Impossible" and "Ronin", he has a great deal of talent. I think if I wasn't a fan I probably would have missed this gem of a movie. I enjoy murder mysteries and this was a good one. Fans of movies like "Kiss the Girls" and "Jennifer 8" won't be disappointed. Reno plays a detective sent down from Paris to help the local police to solve an unusual murder. The body was in an odd position and condition for bodies of victims. While he is investigating the case another local Lieutenant, played by Vincent Cassel, finds a girls tomb vandalized and an unusual story about her. The cases begin to intertwine and the action steps up several notches. Excellent acting and the cinematography is beautiful. Good music as well. I was pleasantly rewarded for taking the time to watch this foreign made movie. The production values on it are as good as I have seen on any American made movie. I recommend it strongly.
Movie Review: Fell A Little Short Summary: 4 Stars
I like the movie. I enjoy the DVD.The movie does an excellent work in setting the atmosphere, ambience, and the tone of The Crimson Rivers. I rate these qualities over the story. Watch it. I believe you will experience what I feel. I could relate to the coldness, eccentricity, foreigness, suspense, and many dark emotions that the movie expresses. I like the story too. I am a sucker for stories that developed from few isolate incidents to a grandeur scheme involved almost everyone. From the excellent bonus interview that is included in the DVD, I believe the book would be a much better interpretation of the story. Although, I have to argue that the interviewee are not too modest nor subtle. Almost a classic, but I definitely cannot say it is... just a good movie that you would discuss quite a bit after watching it.
Movie Review: THE PLOT THICKENS..A LITTLE TOO MUCH Summary: 4 Stars
The two CRIMSON RIVERS films (the other is ANGELS OF THE APOCALYPSE) have a lot in common: they have the talented Jean Reno as the battle-wearied investigator, and they are filmed lusciously and atmospherically. They both also have rather intricate plots which are sometimes hard to follow, but resolve leaving you wondering if you REALLY know what went on. But one can't deny their brooding excellence in terms of production values. This one also stars the moody Vincent Cassel as a policeman who finds that the desecration of a child's tomb may coincide with the grisly murders Reno is trying to solve. An elite university seems to be at the core of the crimes, and both investigators work gamely to solve their respective crimes.
A good movie, if a little too involved.
Movie Review: Almost as creepy as the book Summary: 4 Stars
The film's title is derived from a university town's slogan. Nestled up in the Alps, all isolated, is a town of inbreeding professors and students. The relationship with the nearby town is very intersting, although the film does not go there to far, with the exception of a doctor and several interviews conducted by Vincent Cassel (La Haine) and Jean Reno, in response to some murders. The film is directed by the cutie Mathieu Kassovitz (Amelie Pulain). I enjoyed this film for the location and the atmosphere which was created. However, the ending was not quite as surprising as the intended.
Movie Review: Overall worth it Summary: 4 Stars
I actually bought this at Amsterdam's airport. After seeing the previews and reviews overseas last summer, I knew that it would at least be a good movie. I did read the book before getting my hands on the movie. My preference to watch it is in the French, regardless of my lack of French, with the English subtitles. I would highly recommend that people read the book. It explains a lot more, and has much less of a "wrap-up cheesy" ending. Which is why it only gets the four stars. The acting is great as is the chemistry between Reno and Cassel.
