Movie Review: The best collection of SNAFU to get...

The sad fact is that this is probably the best Private SNAFU collection that there ever will be. The Powers-That-Be in our government and at WB never intended for these films to be seen by the public and the film elements simply were not taken very well care of as a consequence. Most of the shorts are in fair to good condition with a few almost approaching excellent shape. No question there are scratches on the film and occasional hissing on the soundtracks, but would do you expect for 60+ year-old films that weren't kept under the best archival conditions?
Those facts aside, it is still a fine collection of War Era cartoons and a very funny one at that. The bawdiness in these shorts doesn't even begin to approach the typical South Park episode so the collection is probably safe for anybody over 15. As for those who are younger, let the parents beware and use their best judgment when youngsters are around. As it is, I think most of the humor will go over the heads of kids younger than 10.
Yes, some of these shorts have appeared as extras on the Looney Tunes Collections on DVD and the older Golden Age of Looney Tunes laserdiscs but even the Warners' releases of the SNAFU shorts really aren't in better shape than the copies presented on the SNAFU DVD set released by Bosko Video.
Enjoy folks and stop b**ching about things that can't be changed. At least these shorts still exist... Unlike the vast majority of silent films made before 1930..
Summary of The Complete Uncensored Private Snafu
Commissioned by the military during World War II, this collection of propaganda cartoons has not been seen in over fifty years. Created by the famed animators at Warner Bros. from 1943-1946 and voiced by the legendary Mel Blanc, this DVD presents all twenty-eight Private Snafu cartoons ever released.The 28 cartoons in this collection were made by the Warner Bros. artists for the Army-Navy Screen Magazine during World War II, and were rarely--if ever--seen by the general public. The title character's name is an acronym for "Situation Normal: All Fouled Up" (substitute another "F-word" if you must), and most of his adventures are mildly didactic: Snafu ignores an Army regulation and/or common sense, and pays the price. In "Snafu vs. Malaria Mike" and "It's Murder She Says..." (1945), he goes without insect repellent in the tropics and ignores insect netting--and catches malaria. The stories were written by Ted "Dr. Seuss" Geisel, and the meters and rhymes echo his children's books. In "Gripes" (1943), Snafu begins, "If I ran this army...." The shots of Snafu's bare posterior and the occasional "damn" or "hell" were considered risqué during the '40s, but the depictions of buck-toothed Japanese soldiers are more likely to raise eyebrows today. Although obviously made quickly and cheaply--Snafu's appearance varies from film to film and Mel Blanc essentially reused Bugs Bunny's voice for the character--many of these cartoons are still funny. Unfortunately, Bosko Video disfigures these historically significant films by periodically inserting its logo into the frame. What were they thinking? --Charles Solomon
