Movie Reviews of The Company of WolvesMovie Review: Creepy, atmospheric... but could've been better Summary: 4 Stars
Neil Jordan has made better movies. This one has many good things going for it: decent acting, a good script based on the wonderful short story by Angela Carter, and a number of different spins on classic werewolf-themed tales, such as the hunter who brings home the paw of a wolf he's killed, only to see that it has turned into a human hand. The young actress playing the lead character, Rosaleen, is great. She and the character of "The Huntsman", towards the end of the movie, rehash the "Red Riding Hood" story with such conviction, intensity, and fire-breathing chemistry, you'd almost think you had never heard the story before. It is easily the best scene in the movie. The rest of the movie isn't so great. It's stylish, for sure. The plot is kind of all over the place, but that's due to the movie's multi-story format and considerable mystique. The ending will confuse some. The special effects are... well, not very special, but decent enough for a limited budget. All in all, a creepy, atmospheric film. Just don't get your hopes up too high. It could've been wrapped up a little tighter.
Movie Review: Fine Company Summary: 4 Stars
Company of Wolves is a beautiful, intriguing, quirky, mysterious film that'll have you coming back time and time again to wrestle with the rich symbolism and dripping atmosphere of dream-like fantasy. The cast all turn in sterling performances and are wonderfully believable in a strange, fairy-tale-like context. Sarah Patterson's bright and fearless 'Rosaleen' is especially excellent. Can't talk about CoW without mentioning the fantastic George Fenton soundtrack which is worth the $s on its own. The only reason I'm rating this is 4 instead of a 5 is the weak bonus material. A few stills from the movie and the original trailers. I'dve loved to have seen some discussion with Jordan. Still, its been a long time coming (released 1984, DVD only since Oct 2002) but worth the wait to bathe again in the rich, mysterious depths of this cult classic!
Movie Review: Very Dark Retelling of Little Red Riding Hood Summary: 4 Stars
This is certainly not, the popular Little Red Riding Hood version written by the the Grimms Brothers,or Perrault. It is a fantastic adult film, for people who have never stopped loving fairy tales. As a lover of Jack Zipes and Maria Tartar. This is a wonderful movie for someone who wants to devalue into a more or less traditional fairy tale retelling. Staring as "the Grandmother" is the wonderful actress Angela Lansbury along with, the young, and quiet lovely Sarah Patterson as "Rosaleen" ( Little Red Riding Hood. ) However, this movie is not for those weak at hearts. The transformation from man to beast, is quiet horrifying indeed. I though surprisingly liked it very well. Also as a bonus is a beautiful background music that really paces the film well.
Movie Review: Neil Jordan's sleeper is a winner Summary: 4 Stars
Beautiful cinematography and a haunting musical score highlight this early Neil Jordan reworking of "Little Red Riding Hood". Some people think it's too slow, but I never have. It's a rainy afternoon type of movie, the kind you watch on the couch when you don't feel well, with a blanket over you and a bowl of soup on the coffee table. It's not a horror movie so much as a series of eerie folk tales as told by Granny (Angela Lansbury) to her granddaughter. The running joke is that all the stories are indirect warnings about men and sex, meant to keep the little girl chaste and virginal! She of course discovers her own womanhood inspite of granny, and ends up in the arms of the big bad wolf! Don't expect horror, this isn't "The Howling" or "American Werewolf". It's a mood piece.
Movie Review: good film Summary: 4 Stars
this is an adaptation of the fairy tale "little red riding hood" not for children.it's got a couple good transformations, not the best i've seen but good nonetheless.i'd imagine kids would find this scary and it's not bad on adults either.i doubt that this film would be made these days as the 80's were able to get away with much more, unless the great terry gilliam were at the helm.i loved the set designs, all the little creatures and the way that the wolves were used were all very well done.as i said, not something i would show my 8 year old daughter in fear of it causing her nightmares but would definitely recommend this for teens and adults.a good horror film for those who don't need axe-wielding murderers to be able to enjoy a more of a fantasy done right.
