Movie Reviews of The Company of Wolves

Movie Review: Neil Jordan's classic fairy tale
Summary: 5 Stars

In 1984, director Neil Jordan directed The Company of Wolves, an adult take on the classic fairy tale, Little Red Riding Hood. The film was released to critical raves and became a cult classic. Art-house audiences around the world embraced this metaphorical fantasy of sexual awakening, which was also an effective horror film, featuring an extremely creepy performance from Angela Lansbury as The Grandmother. Sarah Patterson was breathtaking in the lead role as Rosaleen, the Red Riding Hood character. Her performance was subtle and utterly convincing. These wonderful performances against the ethereal setting and rich symbolism of Neil Jordan's script made for an intellectually stimulating, albeit horrifying and, dare I say it, fun time at the cinema.

Today, the film still holds up. A wonderful and rich experience, it gives you much to think about once the credits have rolled. If substance is what you crave, look no further than The Company of Wolves.

Movie Review: Wholly beguiling and never vulgar
Summary: 5 Stars

Loosely based on the Little Red Riding Hood fairy tale and arguably the best thing Neil Jordan ever did, this film -- love it or hate it -- stands alone in its class.

Cast to perfection (with a particularly arcane performance by Angela Lansbury as the granny), beautifully produced and expertly directed with an inspired music score to match, it was made to last -- which in viewing terms translates into renewed pleasure with every repeat.

Incidentally, the film's apotheotic finale, superbly realized, left a strong impression on sensitive Pink Floyd's Roger Waters, who went as far as to acquire the rights to project the final scene during concerts, to great effect, on one of their "The Wall" tours.

Only criticism must go to the digital video conversion itself, with its overblown sound effects and music, a problem already noticeable on the American VHS tape. The original film, much subtler, never sounded like that.

Movie Review: A very unique film
Summary: 5 Stars

The Company of wolves is a very unique film that has to be watched with an open mind. It's a very surreal fantasy-horror story all of which takes place within the mind of a sleeping adolescent girl. Each story is filled with beautifully done metaphors and similes in which the werewolves represent puberty, sexuality, masculinity, and sexual awakening though there is no actual sex in the entire movie. It's very beautifully done. And even if you don't like symbolism and faery-tale style movies the werewolf transformations are quite unnerving and the stories the grandmother tells Rosaleen (which are acted out as short stories in the movie) are rather chilling. This is the most original werewolf movie you will ever come across. There has never been or will there ever be again anything quite like it.

Movie Review: Oh My Grandma What A Great Movie!
Summary: 5 Stars

I hate scary movies! I tuned in on TV to what I thought was a documentary on wolves. I watched this movie for about 4 or 5 min. then switched channels. I couldn't stop thinking about it so I switched back & finished watching it! It was so unique in it's presentation. Some of the characters are very bizarre, not just in costume but in attitudes, behavior &/or beliefs. It is so creatively done that you cannot help but want to know more about it & amazingly absent of gore. If you like the style of the Cohen Brothers (Fargo, Raising Arizona) then you will LOVE this. Definitely a totally different style of horror film. Not recommended for children though, teenagers & adults only would be my call. I just ordered the dvd!

Movie Review: Neil Jordan brings the subtext of Little Red Riding to just beneath the surface in this story within a story
Summary: 5 Stars

Rosaleen [Sarah Patterson], an awkward and difficult young girl on the edge of adolescence, falls into a troubled sleep in which her dreams play out a version of the Little Red Riding Hood tale. Fairy tales have long been thought of as a way to approach difficult subjects, like sex, with children, the true message masked in fantastic characters and stories. Using stories within stories, Neil Jordan brings these taboos to just beneath the surface, for our contemplation. Filled with unique and mesmerizing imagery, The Company of Wolves is a lush, intelligent and provocative retelling of one of our most well-known and loved fairy tales.
